Washington Wild Things News Release
AUGUSTA, NJ (August 3 - GAME 1): Sussex County took the first of Tuesday's doubleheader to snap Washington's seven-game win streak, its longest of the season. The Miners scored three in the second and didn't look back, taking the seven-inning contest 4-3.
Washington started the scoring in the first of the twinbill at Skylands Stadium and did so in the first inning. Reigning Frontier League Player of the Week Bralin Jackson swung at the first pitch he saw and doubled to left center bringing home Andrew Sohn, who had singled with one out.
Sussex County brought in three aided by a Washington error in the second. The error by Scotty Dubrule on a grounded ball by Trevin Esquerra allowed Esquerra to reach and go to second while the other two runner went two bases each, the first one scoring to tie the game at one a side. Daniel Herrera plated two with a single to make it 3-1 Miners. Sussex County added a run on a Cito Culver sacrifice fly in the third inning and led 4-1 until the top of the fifth when Washington got going again.
The Wild Things managed three hits in the fifth inning. Hector Roa and Trevor Casanova started the frame with hits against starter Gavin Sonnier that chased him from the game. Danny Zardon entered and got two outs before giving up a two-run single to lead-off man Nick Ward that made it 4-3. The runs were charged to Sonnier.
Washington got the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the sixth but couldn't plate either. The Wild Things then got the tying run to third in the seventh and the go-ahead run aboard but couldn't get either to score.
AUGUSTA, NJ (August 3 - Game 2) - Sussex County earned a doubleheader sweep of the Wild Things with a game two victory by a final of 3-0.
Sussex County was able to strand two Washington baserunners in the top of the first before scoring twice in the home half of the frame. Chuck Taylor hit his sixth home run of the season before Audy Ciriaco lifted a sac fly to bring home the second run of the inning, which was unearned after an error kept the runner that scored on base. A sac fly by Taylor scored Eric Jenkins in the second to make it 3-0.
Bralin Jackson had two hits in the loss to follow his three-hit game one. Scotty Dubrule, after losing his 13-game hit streak but advancing his on-base streak to 14 games in game one, singled in his first plate appearance to make the latter 15 games. One of the other two Washington hits came from Tristan Peterson. Nick Ward walked twice. Trevor Casanova doubled in the seventh inning.
The series continues tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. with game three of four at Skylands Stadium. The pitching matchup is TBA.
