Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies scored three runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good Tuesday night in a 7-4 win over the Southern Illinois Miners at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
Southern Illinois (31-30) struck first on a two-run homer in the top of the second inning, but the Grizzlies (28-33) immediately answered in the home half of the frame when Justin Jones drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Nick Rotola laced a two-run double into right-center field.
Jones added a solo home run in the fourth inning to extend the Grizzlies' lead to 4-2.
Gateway starter Jordan Barrett maintained the advantage through six innings of two-run ball. He struck out four and walked two but did not factor in the decision.
The Miners scored twice to tie the game in the seventh, but Cody Thompson came out of the bullpen to strand the bases loaded and keep the Grizzlies level to set up their three-run seventh inning.
Miners manager Mike Pinto turned to standout starter Zac Westcott for a surprise relief appearance in the seventh, but the Grizzlies got three runs off of him (all unearned after a leadoff error) on RBI walks by Connor Owings and Jose Rosario and a Jones RBI single.
Carter Hayes earned a hold with a perfect eighth inning and Tanner Cable picked up his third save with a perfect ninth. Grizzlies relievers combined to retire the last seven Miners batters with five strikeouts for the Grizzlies' third straight win.
Gateway will go for the series win Wednesday night with a 6:45 p.m. CDT first pitch in Sauget.
