Warriors Well Rested After Busy Stretch
January 27, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
This week was the first without a midweek game for the Warriors since returning from the Christmas break.
The team played 11 games in a span of 18 days to start 2023, winning six and collecting points in all but two games during that stretch.
"That's the key to have had a little bit of practice time," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said. "We took advantage of the week, a little bit of extra rest, but I thought we had a real good week of practice, got the guys back in the gym and just back to normal."
The Warriors are coming off a gruelling week that saw them play four games in six nights, three on the road, against the two teams they're chasing in the East Division.
Moose Jaw opened the week with a home-and-home sweep against Saskatoon before losing twice, once in a shootout, in Winnipeg last weekend.
Warriors forward Ryder Korczak said the team saw during that stretch that they're right there with the top teams.
"I thought we played really good Saturday [in Winnipeg], I thought we deserved to win," he said. "Sunday wasn't very good, just off the gas there."
O'Leary said playing a tight game against Winnipeg on Saturday was key for the Warriors moving forward.
"The first step was get that bad taste out of our mouth and what it's been like playing in Winnipeg, I thought we did that, we deserved a win," he said.
"It's one thing to do it on one night, but we get into playoff time, where back-to-backs are all over the place, you've got to be able to sustain that energy and that commitment to check and that's what we're working on."
This weekend, the Warriors return to the Hangar for two games against two teams that have given them a bit of trouble this season, Brandon and Medicine Hat.
Korczak said the team needs to focus on themselves over the two games.
"Just stick to our game, we can't be complacent," he said. "They're going to be there and be coming for two points, so should be a good game."
The Warriors host the Wheat Kings on Friday night and then welcome in the Tigers on Saturday. Puck drops at 7 p.m. for both games.
