Warriors Strike in Overtime against Oil Kings

October 10, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Jadon Joseph scored midway through overtime to lift the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings Wednesday at Mosaic Place.

The first period was fast as both teams raced up the ice and looked to go on the attack.

Moose Jaw was limited to four shots in the period but they were able to create several quality chances.  Edmonton, on the other hand, had six shots in the frame but the Warriors did a good job blocking shots and keeping their quality chances to a minimum.

Approaching the two-minute mark of the first period, Jadon Joseph worked his way down the Edmonton left boards and then forced the puck towards the net.  Keenan Taphorn jammed at the puck along the left side and was able to tuck in his fifth of the season.

Edmonton responded with less than four minutes left in the period.  Matthew Robertson let a shot go from the left blue line, the Warriors blocked the shot but the puck came to a wide-open Riley Sawchuk inside the right circle where he tied the game at one.

The teams kept the energy level high as they pushed up the ice and combined for 29 shots in the middle period.

Edmonton took the lead at 3:30 with a power-play goal from Matthew Robertson.

At 8:35, the Warriors pushed the puck below the Edmonton goal line.  20-year-old Owen Hardy fought the puck away from the Oil Kings and converted on a wrap-around attempt, his second goal of the season tied the game at two.

Moose Jaw took the lead with two and a half minutes left in the period and working on the power-play.

Jadon Joseph came up the ice and skated down the Edmonton left boards and then made a short pass to Eric Alarie inside the left circle.

Alarie looked over his shoulder and made the pass to defenceman Matthew Benson joining the rush in the middle of the ice, Benson put a quick shot the back of the net for his first WHL goal.

Edmonton turned up the heat in the third period, outshooting the Warriors 18-3 in the frame.

Moose Jaw did a good job blocking shots and keeping the Oil Kings quality chances down.  However, inside the final minute of regulation and with Edmonton's net empty for an extra attacker, the Oil Kings pushed the puck to the top of the Warriors crease where Riley Sawchuk jammed in the game-tying goal.

In overtime, the Warriors controlled the pace of the period as they were able to keep sustained pressure inside the Edmonton zone.

At 2:49, Carson Denomie spun off the Edmonton left boards and drove towards the net.  As he got to the bottom of the circle, he dished the puck to the top of the Edmonton crease where Jadon Joseph knocked in the game-winning goal.

Joseph led the Warriors with a goal and three points, Carson Denomie picked up two assists, and Bailey Brkin made 33 saves.

Edmonton outshot the Warriors 36-28, while Moose Jaw was 1-for-2 on the power-play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
