Broncos Drop 8-2 Decision to Portland

October 10, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Swift Current Broncos News Release

SWIFT CURRENT, SK - The Swift Current Broncos (2-4-0-0) were holding their own with the Portland Winterhawks (4-3-0-0) through 40 minutes, but the Winterhawks pulled away in the third with four goals to take the game 8-2.

Simon Knak opened the scoring with a power-play goal just 4:01 into the game, but Aiden Bulych answered back with a power-play marker of his own, his first career goal, to tie the game just a minute later.

After a turnover by the Broncos in their own end, Seth Jarvis took advantage by cutting to the slot and firing the puck past the glove of Reece Klassen to restore Portland's lead heading into the second.

Early in the middle frame, the Broncos had a length five-on-three power play, and Ethan O'Rourke was able to pounce on a loose puck before Joel Hofer could cover it for his first of the year to tie the game 3:34 into the second.

The Winterhawks took advantage of the Broncos penalty kill all night, and their captain Johnny Ludvig scored his fourth of the year just over four minutes after O'Rourke's goal to restore the Winterhawks lead.

Six minutes later, on another power play, Ludvig's one timer was redirected into the net by Reece Newkirk to extend Portland's lead to 4-2 heading into the third. Portland finished the game 3-for-3 on the power play.

Just 1:45 into the third, Cross Hanas scored coming down the left wing after a nice move around a defencemen and beat Klassen on the glove side.

Rouleau's Kade Nolan scored his first-career WHL goal on a delayed penalty later in the period before Mason Mannek and Lane Gilliss capped off the scoring as the Broncos dropped their second consecutive game. Hofer finished with 24 saves in net while Klassen, making his Broncos debut, turned aside 32.

The Broncos are back in action Saturday night when they host the Winnipeg ICE to the iPlex before embarking on their British Columbia road trip.

Announced attendance was 1,916.
