GREENVILLE, S.C. - Chris McCarthy scored the game-winning goal just 25 seconds into overtime as the Greenville Road Warriors (24-13-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, notched a 3-2 comeback victory over the Indy Fuel (7-21-7) in their inaugural meeting on Thursday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
Emerson Clark and Trevor Parkes each scored in regulation to pull the Warriors even after falling into a two-goal deficit at the mid-way mark, which helped Greenville capture its 24th win of the season and improve the club to 13-5-0 on SANDLAPPER Securities Rink this season.
The Road Warriors are now two points behind Florida for the top spot in the East Division standings.
The Fuel notched a pair of power play goals to build a 2-0 lead through the first 29 minutes of the contest, the first of which came just 6:02 into the first period. With Mike Banwell in the box serving a two-minute minor for interference, Kyle Stroh found Nick Bruneteau at the top of the slot for a quick wrist shot that beat Jeff Malcolm for his third goal of the season.
Indy extended its lead on its second power play of the contest at 8:40 of the middle frame when Vincent Arseneau found the back of the net while Bretton Cameron was in the box for cross-checking. With a head of stream on the right side, Justin Holl raced to the bottom of the circle and fed a sharp pass to the doorstep where Arseneau finished on a one-time redirection.
The Road Warriors cut their deficit to one at 14:31 of the second period courtesy of Clark's 12th goal of the season, which ties Tyler Brown for the team-lead in 2014-15. At the top of the left point, Banwell wound up and fired a slap shot that was turned aside by goaltender Shane Owen, but the rebound fell right to Clark who lifted it over Owen's glove and into the back of cage.
Just 56 seconds later, Parkes tied the game during a 3-on-2 rush into the Indy zone. From top of the point, Josh Nicholls found Parkes on the right wing, who cut through the circle and to the front of the net before sending a backhand shot between Owen's pads at 15:27.
With just 2:10 remaining in regulation. Clark was blasted into the end-wall behind Indy's net by Holl following an offside side whistle. Holl was assessed a five-minute, cross-checking major for the hit, while Clark was given a two-minute unsportsmanlike conduct minor, which set up a late power play that carried into overtime.
In the extra frame, Chris McCarthy scored the game-winner on a one-time slap shot from the left circle, set up by Vinny Saponari and Ryan Hegarty, just 25 seconds in for the 3-2 final.
The Road Warriors finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play and 1-for-3 on the penalty kill. Malcolm (15-7-0) made 28 saves in the winning effort, while Owen (7-12-1) stopped 28 shots and suffered the loss.
Greenville outshot Indy 31-30.
