Warriors Falter Late in Loss to Rebels

November 6, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

The Moose Jaw Warriors had a shot at handing the first loss of the year to the Red Deer Rebels, but couldn't finish the job.

The Warriors dropped a 4-2 game to the Rebels on Saturday night at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.

"That sucks for sure, we had them and then, you know, they're running hot right now and they found a way to win," Warriors forward Brayden Yager said.

The Warriors led 2-0 early in the second period, but surrendered four unanswered goals, including three in the third period to fall to the Rebels for the second time this season.

Red Deer is now a perfect 15-0-0-0 this season, while Moose Jaw dropped to 9-6-0-0 on the year.

"I thought we played a pretty good game, we gave ourselves a chance to win," Warriors assistant coach Scott King said. "Obviously in the second period, penalties put us behind the eight-ball and you give Red Deer that many opportunities eventually they're going to make you pay."

After the Warriors scored to take a two-goal lead, Moose Jaw took four straight penalties to swing momentum in the Rebels' favour.

"These are always lessoned learned, especially for young players," King said.

Yager said the Warriors will have a short memory and build off what they were able to do well on the night.

"Any time you lose, you just want to take it as a learning opportunity," he said. "This was a really good test for us and it sucks that we couldn't get the job done, but just have a short memory and come back Tuesday."

Yager opened the scoring for the Warriors only 1:13 into the game, burying a rebound at the side of the net for his seventh of the season.

Moose Jaw put together a strong opening period and built off it to start the second. With an early power play, Atley Calvert wired home his seventh of the season just 3:06 into the frame to make it 2-0.

Penalties for Moose Jaw swung the momentum to Red Deer's side and they capitalized when Kai Uchacz tipped home his league-leading 14th goal of the season to make it a one-goal game heading into the third.

The Rebels tied the game with a shorthanded goal by Jace Isley midway through the period and then just over three minutes later, Isley scored the eventual game-winning goal.

Uchacz's second of the night in the final minute sealed the win for Red Deer.

Connor Ungar stopped 24 shots in the loss, while Kyle Kelsey made 21 saves to earn the win.

Moose Jaw will be back in action on Tuesday night when they host the defending WHL Champion Edmonton Oil Kings at the Hangar.
