Spokane Chiefs News Release

Portland, Ore. - After getting out to a three-goal deficit in the first period, the Spokane Chiefs battled back and forced a shootout against the Portland Winterhawks Sunday night, but ultimately fell 8-7. Ty Cheveldayoff recorded his first WHL career hat trick in the contest and earned second star honors.

The Chiefs got off to a rough start, as the Winterhawks scored four-straight goals to start the game. It started with a power play goal by Jack O'Brien less than three minutes into play. Ryan McCleary followed that up at 6:28 with his second of the year to quickly tilt the game in a 2-0 Portland favor.

Luca Cagnoni added a power play goal of his own just under the halfway mark, and O'Brien tacked on the third power play goal of the period at 13:28 to make it 4-0.

Team captain Raegan Wiles got the Chiefs on the board at 17:06 with a rocket from the middle. Jake Gudelj and Blake Swetlikoff earned assists on the play as Spokane went into the first intermission down 4-1.

But the Chiefs made it interesting in the middle frame, starting with a short-handed goal from alternate captain Blake Swetlikoff just 42 seconds into play.

Cheveldayoff found the twine for the first time three and a half minutes later on the man advantage with help from Swetlikoff and Wiles to bring Spokane within one.

The rest of the period was a back-and-forth affair as Portland got a short-handed goal of their own at 4:46 courtesy of Gabe Klassen.

Wiles then netted his second of the night on another power play less than a minute later to make it 5-4, Portland. Swetlikoff and Bertholet were credited with the assists. The goal marked Wiles' sixth of the season and his third of the weekend.

Spokane tied things up later in the period when winger Carter Streek found the twine for the second-straight night after receiving a beautiful backhanded feed from Cheveldayoff along the boards. Defenseman Brayden Crampton also earned an assist on the play.

The Winterhawks got one more on the board at 17:32 in the period when Robbie Fromm-Delorme capitalized on another power play.

The Chiefs showed no quit, scoring their sixth of the night and tying things up again 6-6 at 18:52 - Cheveldayoff's second of the game with Bertholet and Wiles notching assists.

Portland once again opened the scoring of the final frame, as Fromm-Delorme netted his seventh of the year at 2:17.

Spokane was able to keep the Winterhawks at bay for the rest of the period. With under a minute left to go in regulation, Bertholet connected with Cheveldayoff right in front of the net, who shoveled in his own rebound to complete his hat trick and send the game to overtime at 7-7.

A scoreless overtime period took things to a shootout. Streek and Klassen both were shut down in the first round. Marcus Nguyen got one for Portland in the second round. Wiles found the twine in the third round, but so did Cagnoni, securing the Winterhawks 8-7 victory.

Special teams went 2-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-6 on the penalty kill. The Chiefs were outshot 41-39, but controlled the second and overtime frames (15-10 and 6-3, respectively).

Mason Beaupit started in net, but was relieved by rookie Cooper Michaluk after the fourth Portland goal in the first period. Michaluk stopped 27-of-30.

Wiles finished with five points on the night (2G-3A), while Cheveldayoff and Swetlikoff each finished with four (3G-1A and 1G-3A, respectively). Swetlikoff also won 19-of-28 face-offs (68%).

Up next, the Chiefs will head back home to host the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday, November 11.
