The Matchup

The Hawks and Chiefs met in Spokane just shy of a month ago in a 5-2 Portland win on Oct. 9. Much like last night, the Winterhawks' power play was in overdrive with four goals on seven attempts to carry the team's offense. Robbie Fromm-Delorme was in fine form with four points, and Jan Špunar picked up the win with 24 saves.

Both teams have shuffled things on the back end since then, with the Chiefs sending Graham Sward to Winnipeg for another blueliner and the Winterhawks dealing Kurtis Smythe to Medicine Hat, but the cores of both teams remain. One notable absence - star Spokane rookie Berkly Catton is currently away with Team Canada at the World U17 Hockey Challenge, so look for other Chiefs to step up in an effort to replace their third-leading scorer.

Busy Hawks, Busy Chiefs

This week marked Portland's first truly grueling stretch of the year, a run of four games in five nights which included a three-in-three this weekend. So far, though, the Hawks have thrived, taking a point against Prince George on Wednesday and knocking off the Seattle Thunderbirds in both ends of a home-and-home Friday and Saturday.

On the other side, Spokane comes to town looking to right their ship a bit as they conclude a three-in-three of their own. After kicking off their season with a pair of back-to-back wins in Victoria, the Chiefs have won just one of their last 11 games and are currently mired in a seven-game losing streak after dropping two to Prince George already this weekend.

Big Points

Last season saw the Winterhawks struggle early in the year before a herculean effort brought them all the way up to third in the Western Conference. This year, the club is focused on making every game count, from the start of the season to the last game of the year. Points earned in October and November count just the same as the ones in March - a lesson this year's Winterhawks are taking to heart.

"We kind of learned last year that the few points at the start of the season mean a lot toward the end, so I think we're taking a good approach this year and we're starting off really hot and hopefully it can continue," said Dawson Pasternak after the last meeting between Portland and Spokane on Oct. 9.

Coming off of two straight wins over championship-caliber competition in Seattle and playing their third game in as many days, the Hawks will need to keep their focus to pick up a win and complete the three-game weekend sweep.
