Raiders' Comeback Bid Falls Short to the Silvertips
November 6, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release
The Prince Albert Raiders battled back from a 3-0 first period deficit, but fell just short to the Everett Silvertips 3-2 on Saturday night. Caden Zaplitny and Olen Zellweger scored twice each for the Silvertips, while Evan Herman and Keaton Sorensen had the Raider goals.
It took just 1:46 for Everett to score the first goal of the game, and took them 6:52 into the first to go up 3-0. Olen Zellweger kicked things off with a powerplay goal, while Caden Zaplitny added two more goals after that. If the score wasn't indicative enough, the Silvertips dominated the first period, leading 18-7 in shots on goal. Everett went 1/2 on the man advantage in the first period, while the Raiders didn't find themselves on the powerplay in the opening frame, as they went into the second period trailing 3-0.
Everett continued to dominate most of the play in the second period, but it was Prince Albert who scored the only goal of the middle frame, and it came on the powerplay. Evan Herman wired a shot from the left circle beating Silvertips starter Tim Metzger for his second goal of the year to cut Everett's lead to 3-1.
That would be the score after 40 minutes of play, with Everett leading 30-10 in shots, including a 12-3 gap in that second period.
The Raiders turned up their pace of play in the third period, firing 10 shots at Metzger. The team thought they had found the game's tying goal past the midway point of the final frame, but a diving play by Metzger covered a loose puck just before crossing the goal line, preserving Everett's one goal lead.
Zellweger added his second goal of the night with six seconds left in the game to make it 4-2, which would be the final.
Tikhon Chaika put in one of his strongest performances in goal with 38 saves on 41 shots, while Metzger stopped 18 of 20 shots thrown his way.
Prince Albert falls to 4-11-2-0 with the loss. The team hits the road to Alberta for games in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
