Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Brandon, MB - The Moose Jaw Warriors will be looking to turn the page quickly following a lopsided preseason loss in Brandon on Friday night.
Moose Jaw fell 9-1 to the Wheat Kings to kick-off their weekend home-and-home set to finish off the exhibition schedule.
"We were a half step behind for the majority of the game, I thought there's a couple of shifts here and there where the guys were forechecking hard and causing turnovers and we just couldn't keep it consistent," Warriors assistant coach Curtis Pereverzoff said.
Sam Borschowa scored his first of the preseason midway through the second period, but that was all the offence for the Warriors on the night.
Pereverzoff said the loss stings less because it is still preseason, but the Warriors have areas to improve.
"Process is definitely the most important thing," he said. "The outcome is never fun to see a performance like that, but at the end of the day, we need guys playing the right way and making sure that they're doing their jobs and paying attention to the details."
Brandon struck for three goals in the first period, extended their lead to 5-1 after two and then finished with four more markers in the third to seal the win.
With one more preseason game on tap on Saturday in Moose Jaw, Pereverzoff said the players will have another opportunity to prepare their game for the regular season.
"Just making their job easier on themselves," he said. "We talk a lot about finishing inside, making sure that we're not getting caught outside and allowing shots in high, dangerous scoring opportunities, so for them, just making sure that they're following on those details."
Josh Banini started in goal for Moose Jaw, making 17 saves on 22 shots, while Dimitri Fortin turned away 20-of-24 shots during the second half of the contest.
The Warriors finished 0-for-2 with the man advantage and went 2-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Moose Jaw and Brandon face-off at 7 p.m. on Saturday night at the Moose Jaw Events Centre. Tickets are available for the game online and at the MJEC Box Office.
The regular season will get underway next weekend with the Warriors travelling to Prince Albert on Sept. 22 and then hosting the Wheat Kings on Sept. 23 in the 2023-24 Mad Greek Home Opener.
