Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos wrapped up the pre-season with a 10-3 loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday night at InnovationPlex.
Things seemed to be on the right track for the Broncos early on in this contest following a 10-7 loss the night prior in Medicine Hat. Maddix McCagherty opened the scoring for Swift Current, while Gavin McKenna would then respond for the Tigers. A Clarke Caswell shorthanded goal restored the Broncos lead and things were looking up for the home team.
"We were real happy with how the first period went," Assistant Coach Taras McEwen said on the post-game show. "Some of the things we talked about yesterday, some of the positive things we carried into the first period. Carried a lot of the play, out chances them."
However things took a turn in the second starting with a Medicine Hat goal just 15 seconds into the second period, it was eight unanswered goals for the Tigers between the second and first half of the third period, led by a Hunter St. Martin hat-trick. The Tigers led 6-2 after two periods of play and after Brady Birnie made it 9-3 in the third, the Tigers made it 10-3.
"I just felt that once we hit the second, ran into a little adversity, when they scored and didn't answer back," McEwen said. "And in this league, you have to be ready to play."
The teams played an overtime period as well as a three-man shootout. In the overtime it was Peyton Kettles scoring for Swift Current, while the Tigers had all three shooters score in the shootout. Ty Coupland scored for the Broncos in the shootout.
The Broncos wrap up the pre-season with a 1-3-0-0 record and will take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the first home and home of the season on Friday and Saturday.
