Portland Winterhawks News Release

Kennewick, Wash. - The Portland Winterhawks wrapped up preseason play with a 6-2 victory over the Spokane Chiefs, their fourth straight win of the exhibition slate.

A tight first 30 minutes gave way to a Winterhawks romp with four unanswered goals across the second and third periods. Alex Thompson and Tyson Yaremko got the Hawks going early, but a pair of Carter Streek strikes equalized things for the Chiefs through half of the game. But 11:01 into the second period, Marcus Nguyen grabbed what would be the game-winning goal and the Hawks poured it on from there. Kyle Chyzowski struck early in the third in his second game since returning from injury, followed by Diego Buttazzoni's league-leading fifth goal of the preseason and a late marker from Braeden Jockims.

Buttazzoni finishes preseason leading the WHL in goals (5) and co-leading in points (11).

Goaltenders Luke Brunen and Justen Maric split duties between the pipes, with Brunen stopping 18 of 20 shots in 29 minutes and Maric going 16 for 16 in 31.

With preseason in the rearview mirror, Portland looks ahead to the season-opening road trip starting next Friday in Wenatchee as the Winterhawks take on the Wild in their WHL debut at 7:00 P.M. Fans can catch all the regular season action with WHL Live on CHL TV.
