Warriors End Weekend with Loss in Regina
January 16, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors finished off the weekend with a dud in Regina on Sunday afternoon.
Moose Jaw surrendered four goals in the first period and went on to lose 7-1 against the rival Pats at the Brandt Centre.
"We didn't come to play and we've got to figure out how to play better on the road, that's the biggest thing with us this year," Warriors forward Jagger Firkus said after the loss.
Firkus has the Warriors' lone goal, getting the team on the board late in the first period, but Moose Jaw couldn't build momentum off the goal, allowing Regina to score just 47 seconds into the second.
The Warriors are now 5-10-2-0 on the road, while 12-6-1-1 at home this season.
"I just don't think we're showing up ready," Firkus said. "We've just got to come prepared and ready to play."
Luck wasn't on the Warriors' side in the loss, as the team hit five posts throughout the game.
"Sometimes you've got to work for your luck," Warriors assistant coach Gord Burnett said.
The Warriors were outshot 39-22 in the loss. Jackson Unger allowed four goals on 11 shots before being relieved by Carl Tetachuk, who stopped 25 shots over the final 48 minutes.
Burnett said the Warriors were on the outside too much in the offensive zone.
"They make it hard to get inside, but you've got to work for that too," he said. "If you can't get inside, it's tough to win hockey games, that's where games are won and lost."
The Pats jumped out of the gates quickly with Jakob Brook banging in a rebound just 2:44 into the game.
Then, Connor Bedard added to the lead only 3:10 later.
Less than two minutes after that, Zack Stringer made it 3-0 for the Pats and then 4:25 later, Tanner Howe scored a power play goal to give Regina a four-goal advantage.
Moose Jaw gained some momentum late in the period when Firkus finished off a great feed from Ryder Korcak for his 21st goal of the season, making it 4-1 after one.
That momentum didn't carry over to the second period as Cole Carrier added to Regina's lead just 47 seconds into the middle frame.
Howe's second of the night came with 2:50 left in the second and put Regina in front 6-1 after two.
In the third, Drew Englot snuck the puck past Tetachuk with 6:16 gone to finish off the 7-1 win for the Pats.
The Warriors will now get a couple of days to rest before they host the Calgary Hitmen at Mosaic Place on Wednesday night. Get your tickets at mjwarriors.ca.
