Hawks Extend Point Streak to Seven Straight on Saturday Night
January 16, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Winterhawks stretched their point streak to seven games, but Dwayne Jean Jr.'s shootout tally helped the Americans take the bonus point in a 2-1 shootout victory at the VMC on Saturday. Goaltender Nick Avakyan (uh-VAW-key-in) earned first star honors with 44 saves between the Tri-City pipes.
Following a goal-less opening stanza, Tri-City's Jake Sloan broke the ice with his 14th marker of the year as he collected a loose puck in front of the net and slotted it home on a 5-on-3 advantage for the Americans. Five minutes later, though, Luca Cagnoni (can-YO-knee) knotted the score at a goal apiece with his fourth of the year for the Winterhawks. Cagnoni extracted the puck from a bevy of humanity in front of the net and tucked it past the outstretched skate of Tri-City's Nick Avakyan for the game-tying tally.
A tense third period featured chances by both teams but no goals as we headed to overtime. Both netminders stood tall to maintain the deadlock, forcing a shootout, where Jean Jr. notched the lone goal to seal two points for Tri-City.
Dante Giannuzzi finished with 20 saves on the night in his first start since Jan. 1, and has backstopped the Hawks to at least a point in each of his last five starts for the team. The Winterhawks next take on the Kamloops Blazers at 5 p.m. at the VMC on Sunday.
