WHL Regina Pats

Pats Pound Warriors 7-1

January 16, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release

Regina, Sask. - The Regina Pats were too much for the Moose Jaw Warriors to handle on Sunday afternoon, as the Regiment rolled over their Highway 1 rivals by a score of 7-1.

It was the Pats first game since January 1 and the Warriors third game in three days, and right from the get go, it was clear rust was not to be a factor for the home side.

The Pats struck four times in the first 8:07 of the game, with goals from Jakob Brook, Connor Bedard, Zack Stringer and Tanner Howe.

Even though the Warriors, got one back before the first period ended, the visitors didn't have enough energy to launch any sort of comeback, with the Pats adding a pair of second period goals and one in the third to come away with a convincing victory.

Regina's power play was a big reason for Sunday's success: as it went 3-for-5.

Tanner Howe was named the game's first star thanks to a four-point performance (2G, 2A), while Connor Bedard (1G, 2A), Ryker Evans (3A) and Logan Nijhoff (2A) each also registered multi-point games. Thirteen different Pats had at least a point in the win.

THE GOALS

1st Period

REG 1-0 at 2:44 - Jakob Brook (2), assisted by Easton Armstrong (2) and Tom Cadieux (10) // Cadieux's point shot was stopped, but Unger was only able to stop one rebound, not two, as Brook put the puck home just as he got cross-checked from behind into the net.

REG 2-0 at 5:54 - Connor Bedard (19), assisted by Logan Nijhoff (12) and Tanner Howe (14) (PPG) // Nijhoff made a great cross-ice pass to Bedard on the power play, who sniped one inside the post that sent the water bottle flying.

REG 3-0 at 7:28 - Zack Stringer (7), assisted by Connor Bedard (11) and Ryker Evans (26) // Evans broke up the play in the neutral zone, before Bedard regrouped and spun a backhand pass back into the offensive zone, catching the Warriors on a change. Stringer was able to get to the puck before any opponent and quickly lifted the puck right to the top corner.

REG 4-0 at 11:53 - Tanner Howe (13), assisted by 41 Ryker Evans (27) and Connor Bedard (12) (PPG) // Seconds after fanning on a one-timer, Howe made the second attempt count, beating Unger past the short side on the man advantage.

MJ 1-4 at 13:31 - Jagger Firkus (21), assisted by Ryder Korczak and Daemon Hunt // A great centering feed from Korczak found Firkus for the one-timer on the back door.

2nd Period

REG 5-1 at 0:47 - Cole Carrier (12), assisted by Parker Berge (6) and Cole Dubinsky (10) // Berge's point shot missed the net, but banked right to Carrier at the side of the goal, who had the entire upper half of the net to shoot at.

REG 6-1 at 17:10 - Tanner Howe (14), assisted by Ryker Evans (28) and Logan Nijhoff (13) (PPG) // Another one-time goal from Howe on the power play. Stop us if you've heard this one before...

Third period

REG 7-1 at 6:16 - Drew Englot (6), assisted by Tanner Howe (15) and Layton Feist (11) // Englot entered the offensive zone down the left side with speed, and chipped the puck on goal from a bad angle, that somehow squeaked through.
