Warrior Prospects Named to Under 16 Rosters

Moose Jaw Warrior prospects Zachary Sawchenko and Ryan Gardiner will represent their respective provinces next month when they take part in the Western Canada Under 16 Challenge Cup.

Sawchenko, who was the Warriors first pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, was named to Team Alberta earlier today. He is currently playing with the Notre Dame Argos in the SMAAAHL, in four games this year the Calgary product is 1-1-1 with a 3.57gaa and .890sv%. Last year while with the Calgary Bantam AAA Royals Sawchenko posted a 1.47gaa and .944sv%, back in July he took part in the Allstate All-Canadians NHLPA Mentorship Camp in Toronto.

Earlier this month Warriors 2012 third round bantam pick Ryan Gardiner was named to Team Manitoba. Gardiner is currently playing with the Winnipeg Thrashers in the MMAAAHL, through five games the defenceman has two goals and four points.

The 2012 Western Canada Under 16 Challenge Cup will take place November 1st to 4th at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary. The event features the highest rated players in the under 16 age category representing the four western provinces battling in a round robin format, and is the first step in the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence.

Players who have taken part in this event in the past include Moose Jaw Warrior Morgan Rielly, Red Deer's Matt Dumba, Portland's Derek Pouliot, and Edmonton's Griffin Reinhart, all of whom were selected in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Last year's tournament was held in Moose Jaw and featured current Warriors Brayden Point, Josh Uhrich, and Miles Warkentine.
