San Antonio Missions News Release
Nelson Ward's first Double-A homer highlighted San Antonio's 6-3 win over Tulsa in Tuesday night's series-deciding contest at Wolff Stadium.
For the third straight game, the Missions scored a first-inning run. Auston Bousfield gave San Antonio a quick 1-0 lead on starter Chase De Jong (0-2) when he followed a walk by Ward with a double down the left-field line.
Tulsa responded strongly in the top of the second against right-hander Fabio Castillo, plating three, highlighted by a two-run blast to right by Brandon Trinkwon.
The Missions struck back with a three-spot of their own in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead at 4-3. With runners on second and third and two outs, Ward deposited De Jong's first pitch over the wall in right. The speedy infielder finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and a walk. Ward's six total bases set a new club season high as did his three runs driven in.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Missions tacked on two more courtesy of Gabriel Quintana's double to right off Michael Johnson
The three-run lead was more than enough for the San Antonio pitching trio of Castillo (1-1), Kyle Lloyd (three scoreless innings) and Adam Cimber (first save), who combined to allow just three Driller hits in the victory.
Following an off day on Wednesday, San Antonio (3-3) will begin a six-game road trip Thursday night at Hammons Field in Springfield, Missouri when they take on the Cardinals in the first of three. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM. Bryan Rodriguez (0-0, 3.86) will get the ball for San Antonio in the opener, while Springfield will counter with fellow righty Trey Nielsen (0-0, 13.50).
