Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Alex Bregman's 12th-inning solo home run lifted Corpus Christi to a 5-4 walk-off victory over Springfield Monday at Whataburger Field before 3,251.

With one away, Bregman took a strike from Joey Donofrio (0-1) before smashing his second bomb of the night to left. That made a winner of Michael Freeman (1-0), who worked a 1-2-3 12th.

Rehabbing Astros starter Lance McCullers worked around a lead-off single from Harrison Bader in the first. Bader was sacrificed into scoring position by Breyvic Valera and took third on a passed ball. McCullers got Paul DeJong on a liner to Bregman at short and induced a fly off the bat of Luke Voit for the last out.

Bregman's first Double-A round-tripper put Corpus Christi up 2-0 early. The former LSU Tiger hit a Corey Baker 76-mph breaking ball 388 feet to left on a 0-2 count, Teoscar Hernandez at first with a lead-off walk.

Bruce Caldwell's second home run of 2016, a second-inning lead-off shot just inside the left-field foul pole, halved the Hooks lead.

McCullers, who recorded four strikeouts over three innings and 48 pitches (30 strikes) yielded C.J. McElroy's opening single in the third, but left the Springfield left fielder at third.

Evan Gattis' full-count, two-out bomb restored a two-run advantage for Corpus Christi. Exit velocity of the ball to left was 107 mph. Caldwell answered with his second yard shot of the night, this one off reliever Aaron West.

The Corpus Christi fifth was a puzzling proposition for Springfield. John Brebbia replaced Baker and promptly gave up singles to Mott Hyde and Hernandez. Brebbia then caught Bregman looking, struck Gattis with a pitch, caught Derek Fisher looking, walked J.D. Davis to make it 4-2 Corpus Christi, and then caught Chase McDonald looking.

The Cardinals (3-2) equalized against just-inserted Edison Frias during the sixth, one-out singles by DeJong and Caldwell bookending Voit's double into the left-field corner. Frias faced the minimum for the balance of regulation, striking out four.

Chris Thomas worked a perfect seventh, eighth, and ninth for Springfield. He struck out five Hooks looking.

In all, Corpus Christi (3-2) suffered 15 strikeouts, 11 called. Davis and McDonald were rung up with bases loaded in the 10th, a frame in which the Hooks had runners at the corners with no outs.

The clubs combined for 27 strikeouts.

Bregman has hit safely in all five of Corpus Christi's games.

The series and homestand wrap Tuesday at 7:05, when Hooks right-hander Keegan Yuhl (0-0) meets Mike Mayers (1-0). It's Mike Shaw Automotive Family Night and Half-Price Group Night.
