Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - David Washington's eighth-inning lead-off home run snapped a 3-3 deadlock and ignited a four-run frame as Springfield defeated Corpus Christi 7-3 Tuesday night at Whataburger Field before 3,708.
In the aftermath of Washington's blast, Michael Freeman (1-1) walked Luke Voit and Bruce Caldwell. Corpus Christi elected to go with Brendan McCurry, who then surrendered a three-run shot to Chris Jacobs.
Corey Littrell (1-0) worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and notched the victory.
The Cardinals (4-2) captured the series two games to one by battling back from a pair of two-run deficits.
Teoscar Hernandez, who opened the Corpus Christi (3-3) first with a base hit up the middle and scooted into second when Mike Mayers uncorked a wild pitch, scored the night's first run on Derek Fisher's one-out single to left.
The two were at it again during the third, Fisher's one-out double to right plating Hernandez, who'd reached via a lead-off infield single.
Voit's two-out RBI triple was the Cardinals' answer and cut the advantage in half. C.J. McElroy began the fourth by reaching on a bunt single and stole the keystone before Voit's gapper to right-center.
Hooks starter Keegan Yuhl, lifted due to pitch count considerations with two away in the fifth, exited a bases-loaded situation in favor of newcomer David Schmidt, who coaxed a grounder to third baseman J.D. Davis for the final out. Jacobs was thrown out at home for the second out on a double by Andrew Sohn, center fielder Hernandez to shortstop Alex Bregman to Trent Woodward.
Yuhl's outing included five hits, two walks, and five strikeouts in an 87-pitch effort (50 strikes).
Bregman restored Corpus Christi's two-run advantage by belting a first-pitch 443-foot homer over the left-field berm.
Mayers went an inning deeper than Yuhl. The former Ole Miss Rebel gave up six hits, walked two, and struck out eight.
Paul DeJong's bases-loaded single into right field off Freeman pushed two Cardinals homeward for a 3-3 seventh-inning tie. Freeman had been summoned to quell a two-on, one-out uprising against Schmidt. He retired Harrison Bader but walked McElroy before DeJong struck.
Caldwell has a six-game hitting streak; Bregman's run is of the same length.
The Hooks visit Tulsa and Springfield for six games, returning to Whataburger Field vs. Frisco and Midland April 21-28.
