LAST TIME OUT:
The Riders starter RICHELSON PENA took a perfect game two outs deep into the sixth, and the club carried a no-hitter two outs into the seventh in 1-0 shutout of the Arkansas Travelers on Monday night...Pena allowed a two-out walk to Angel Rosa, ending his night...REED GARRETT continued on the hill, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless frames, but surrendered a two-out double in the seventh to Andrew Daniel to lose the combined no-hit big...the lone Riders run came from RONALD GUZMAN who smashed a solo home run to right field in the sixth inning off of Travs starter Blayne Weller...MATT BUSH closed things out with a two-walk, no-hit ninth.
NEARLY PERFECT:
RICHELSON PENA was so close to perfection last night. He pitched 5 2/3 perfect innings against the Travs before allowing a base-on-balls with two outs in the sixth. Pena exited the game following the walk, and the bullpen took over from there. REED GARRETT and MATT BUSH combined to hold Arkansas scoreless with just one hit (a double) in the remaining 3 1/3 innings.
THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER:
While almost every facet of the RoughRiders team is clicking right now, the bullpen is in the midst of a particularly impressive stretch. Over the past three games, the pen has posted 13 1/3 straight scoreless innings from the combination of CODY BUCKEL, REED GARRETT, ADAM PARKS, JOSE VALDESPINA, RYNE SLACK, and MATT BUSH. Over that
stretch, the relievers have allowed just six hits and seven walks (0.98 WHIP), while striking out nine.
STREAKING START:
Thanks to a three-game sweep over Northwest Arkansas and two wins to begin the series against Arkansas, the Riders have reached 5-0 for just the second time in team history. Frisco opened the 2008 season with five straight victories on the road against Springfield and Arkansas. The club has never begun a season 6-0.
aMAZing DEBUT:
Nomar Mazara (MLB Pipeline No. 3 prospect, Riders '14-15) made history Sunday in his first start with the Rangers. The 20-year-old outfielder became the youngest player to ever record three hits, including one home run, in his Major League debut. Mazara singled in his first two at-bats before smacking a solo homer off 11-year veteran Jered Weaver.
BRETT TO THE BIGS:
Nomar Mazara wasn't the only former Rider to get called up to the Majors. The Rangers purchased the contract of Brett Nicholas (Riders '13), who made his big league debut yesterday, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, catching a 7-3 Rangers win. After playing in Frisco, Nicholas spent the past two seasons with Round Rock and began 2016 with the Express before being promoted Sunday.
FAMILIAR FACES IN FRISCO:
The Riders Opening Day features 17 players who appeared in Frisco last season. Dallas native PRESTON BECK is back home in the Metroplex once again after playing 93 games with the Riders last year. Despite the large number of returning players this year, only five were on the 2015 Opening Day roster.
SKIPPING INTO THE RECORD BOOKS:
JOE MIKULIK has returned for his second season with the RoughRiders. He is the eighth manager in RoughRiders history, and the fourth to return for a second consecutive year. The veteran skipper is in his 18th season as a Minor League manager and has 1,126 all-time wins. 938 of his victories were recorded with the Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League (Class A), setting both a team and league record.
TRAVELING AROUND THE HISTORY BOOKS:
Frisco has fared well against Arkansas since beginning Texas League play in 2003. In 162 total meetings between the two teams, the Riders hold a favorable 102-60-1 record (.626 winning percentage) and are 40-15 at Dickey-Stephens Park (opened in 2007).
TOP OF THE CLASS:
The RoughRiders enter the season with six players ranked in either Baseball America or MLBPipeline.com's Rangers Top 30 Prospects. LEWIS BRINSON, the No. 2 prospect in Rangers' farm system according to MLBPipeline.com and Baseball America, returns to Frisco. He appeared in 28 games for the Riders last season, hitting .291 with six home runs and 23 RBI before being promoted to Round Rock in August. Brinson is joined by five other players named in the lists- RYAN CORDELL (No. 15 in MLB, No. 11 in BA),
RONALD GUZMAN (23, 29), JOSE LECLERC (25, 21), SAM WOLFF (26, NR), and CONNOR SADZECK (27, 26).
OPPOSING STARTER:
The Travs send Kyle McGowin to the hill in the series finale today...The right-hander out of Savannah State is the No. 16 prospect in the Angels system according to MLBPipeline.com and No. 17 in Baseball America's Angels Top 30...The 24-year-old is pitching for the Travs for the third straight season, having been promoted to Double-A in late 2014...The former fifth round pick was tied for the Travelers' lead in games started last year (27), and he went 9-9 with a 4.38 ERA, fanning 125 and walking 50 in 154.0 innings of work...Repertoire: the hard-throwing righty works in the low to mid 90s with his fastball, touching 95...he also possesses a two-seamer, 11-5 slider, and a changeup.
