Chien Ming Wang came within an out of a complete game shutout as the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs edged the York Revolution 3-2 on Thursday night in front of 4,112 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium. After dropping two of three in the series, the Revs will return home on Friday to kick off a seven-game homestand.

Wang (1-0) allowed 11 hits, but all were singles including five infield hits in his Atlantic League debut. The sinker baller and former 19-game winner in the big leagues did not walk a batter and struck out three, while recording 14 ground outs.

Wang and York starter Anthony Lerew matched zeroes early, as both pitchers cruised through the early stages of the contest.

Southern Maryland broke through in the bottom of the fifth, however, scoring three times to provide all of the necessary offense. With one out, Jovan Rosa got things started with a bloop single to right and Jamar Walton followed with a walk. Casey Frawley then ripped a sharp grounder to the hole at short that was knocked down by Eric Patterson for an infield hit to load the bases. Fred Lewis followed with a sharply hit ball that short-hopped second baseman Andres Perez. Controlling the ball briefly, Perez was unable to get the handle to flip to second for a potential inning-ending double play. With an error charged on the play, Rosa crossed the plate with the game's first run. Casey Stevenson followed with a two-run single through the right side to make it 3-0.

The Revs were held scoreless until the top of the ninth. With one out, Nick Ferdinand ripped a first pitch single to left, extending his hitting streak to 12 consecutive games in his final at-bat of the night. Yeicok Calderon then kept the game alive on an infield single with two outs. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Telvin Nash ripped a two-run single up the middle, denying Wang of the shutout and ending his night after 112 pitches (81 strikes). Closer Erik Hamren entered to strike out Salvador Paniagua on three pitches, however, notching his 16th save to secure the win.

Calderon and Nash each went 3-for-4, leading the York offense. Wilson Valdez also had a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3.

Lerew (3-4) suffered the loss, despite allowing just three runs (two earned) over 5.1 innings. He walked only one and struck out five. He has been held without a win over his last six starts despite allowing no more than three earned runs in any of those outings, including exactly two earned runs in each of his last five starts.

Notes: Southern Maryland lowers its magic number to five to clinch a Freedom Division first half title, maintaining a five-game division lead over second-place Sugar Land. Revs manager Mark Mason was ejected for the second time this season, arguing an out call at second base after Valdez was thrown out trying to stretch a single in the top of the eighth; it was the third time that Mason came onto the field to argue a call on the bases, including back-to-back plays in the sixth. Reliever Edward Paredes fired a perfect seventh, and has now worked nine scoreless innings over his last seven outings. Beau Vaughan returned to the mound for the first time since May 20, striking out two batters in a scoreless eighth. York righty Matt Neil (2-4, 4.73) will make the start in Friday's opener against the Bridgeport Bluefish with first pitch at 6:30 p.m. It is a Guaranteed Win Friday presented by Commonwealth Connections Academy and is Boy Scout On-Field Sleepover Night #1. The first 1,000 kids through the gates receive a free Cannonball Charlie Coloring Book. Tickets are on-sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
