Toledo Walleye News Release

Toledo, OH - The Walleye came home on Friday needing to make a statement and a case for their playoff bid. Coming in to the game, Toledo held seventh place only two points away from ninth-place Wheeling. After losing four straight games (two overtimes losses), the home team looked to get an early edge on Cincinnati, the current leader of the North Division.

The first period belonged to the Walleye as they controlled the tempo, scoring two huge goals within minutes apart. While Toledo poured pressure into the Cyclones' zone, the tie was not broken until over the halfway mark. From center, Joe Charlebois fed a strong pass ahead to Tony Romano, who brought it in with Maxime Tanguay to his left. Romano broke right and passed to Tanguay over the crease for an easy two-on-one tip-in at 11:48, beating the helpless Robert Mayer. It was Tanguay's 23rd goal of the season.

Then soon after, now on the power play, Simon Danis-Pepin fired a slapshot from the blue line, starting the next scoring play. The shot was blocked in front, but Scooter Smith found the loose bouncing puck and blasted a top shelf slapper of his own over the stick side of Mayer at 13:53. Smith's 11th of the year made it 2-0, a lead that was carried over to the second period.

"I thought we were able to play our game and clicked on offense in the first," Head Coach Nick Vitucci said. "We were able to create some quality chances against a pretty good team."

The second opened to a shift of momentum, but the Fish were able to stay in control. Backed by a brilliant night in net by Jordan Pearce, Toledo evaded the intense pressure Cincinnati held in the Toledo zone for much of the second and finished the period still holding the two goal lead.

"Pearce came up big for us and made some big saves," Vitucci said. "Even though we out-shot them, they had a lot of good chances."

Toledo put the game out of reach only seconds into the third on a power play. After a shot rolled off the pads of Mayer, Tony Romano cleaned up the rebound and banked it over the goalie only 18 seconds in to the period for the 3-0 lead.

Even though Cincinnati did break Pearce's shutout, the Cyclones had no chance for a comeback. Pearce stopped 29 of 30 shots in the win.
