Walks doom Fightins in loss to Portland

The Reading Fightin Phils (33-43) pitching staff issued a season high 12 walks as they lost to the Portland Sea Dogs (52-27) 12-2 on Friday night. The Fightins also committed a season high six errors. Perci Garner (4-5) suffered his fifth loss as he walked a season high eight batters in 3 1/3 innings.

Perci Garner struggled out of the game as he allowed two runs off one hit and three walks as Portland took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. Stefan Welch hit a sacrifice fly to score Derrik Gibson and Keury De La Cruz hit a RBI single to score Blake Swihart.

Albert Cartwright walked to begin the bottom of the 1st inning which set up for a two-out RBI double by Jake Fox off Brian Johnson (7-1) to put the Fightin Phils on the board, 2-1. Portland extended their lead to 4-1 off Garner in the top of the 3rd inning as De La Cruz hit a RBI single to score Sean Coyle and Peter Hissey added a RBI single to score Stefan Welch.

Portland chased Perci Garner out of the game after 3 1/3 innings as he allowed six runs off four hits and allowing a season high eight walks. Deven Marrero scored on a wild-pitch and Blake Swihart scored on a ball past. Sean Coyle scored on an error by Brock Stassi and Jonathan Roof brought in a run on a fielder's choice to score Stefan Welch to give Portland an 8-1 lead. Those runs were charged to reliever Ryan O'Sullivan.

Blake Swihart hit a single in the top of the 5th inning to center field and an error by Aaron Altherr allowed Derrik Gibson to score and give the Sea Dogs a 9-1 lead. Derrik Gibson hit a RBI double off Kyle Simon in the top of the 6th inning to extend the Sea Dogs lead to 10-1.

Brock Stassi hit his sixth home run of the season off reliever Michael Olmstead in the bottom of the 6th inning to put the Fightins within eight runs, 10-2. Seth Rosin tossed a scoreless eighth inning.

Sean Coyle hit a two-run single off Nefi Ogando in the top of the 9th inning to further the lead for Portland by a score of 12-2.

The Fightin Phils and Portland Sea Dogs meet on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm. Adam Loewen (0-1, 6.10 ERA) will get the start for Reading.
