Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, Ohio) June 27, 2014 - Harrisburg Senators starter John Simms stole the show in his Double-A debut, earning the win in the Sens 4-3 victory over the Akron RubberDucks on Friday evening at Canal Park.
Simms (1-0) threw seven innings for Harrisburg, allowed four hits, one earned run and walked one batter.
The RubberDucks are in second place in the EL West, remaining one game out pending the outcome of the second game of Richmond's doubleheader Friday night. The Flying Squirrels lost the first game of their twinbill against Bowie.
Harrisburg was first on the board, with Michael Taylor scoring during a double steal attempt with Washington Nationals rehabber Bryce Harper in the first inning. A solo homer by Ricky Hague paired with an RBI single by Harper extended the Senators lead to 3-0 in the third.
A triple off the bat of Jake Lowery got the ball rolling for the RubberDucks in the bottom of the third, followed by a Tyler Naquin RBI single to send him across the plate, making the score 3-1 in the third.
An RBI fielder's choice by Harper extended the Senators lead, bringing the score to 4-1 in the top of the eighth. Left fielder Anthony Gallas cracked his third solo home run of the season leading off the 9th against Senators reliever Tyler Herron. After walking the next two hitters, Herron was lifted in favor of closer Robert Benincasa. An RBI double by Ronny Rodriguez drove Tony Wolters home tightening the Harrisburg lead to 4-2 with two outs remaining, but Benincasa closed out the game and earned the save for Harrisburg, by inducing a groundout by Jordan Smith. Both of Benincasa's saves this year have come against the RubberDucks.
Centerfielder Tyler Naquin went 3-2 on the night, prior to exiting the game in the eighth after being hit by a pitch. Naquin leads the team it hits, with 95.
The loss was charged to RubberDucks' starter Cody Anderson (2-7). The right-hander threw six innings, allowed four hits, three earned runs, walked three batters and struck out six.
The Akron RubberDucks will take on the Harrisburg Senators in game three of the four-game series Saturday evening at 7:05 at Canal Park. Righty Duke von Schamann will start for the RubberDucks, and right-hander Colin Bates (0-0) will take the mound for the Senators. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
The Akron RubberDucks are the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The 2014 season is its 18th since moving to Canal Park and its first since becoming the RubberDucks.
