Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes completed a three-game sweep of the Joliet JackHammers tonight, winning the final game 2-1 before 6,465 at Canwest Park.

Winnipeg opened the scoring off Devin Anderson in the third. With two out, Cory Patton doubled and went to third when Wally Backman Jr. booted an Adam Frost grounder at third. Juan Diaz followed with a sharp single to left to score both runners, giving him 89 runs batted in, breaking Terry Lee's single-season franchise record of 88 set in 1996.

After putting up two singles in the first inning off Ace Walker, the JackHammers were held to just a walk in the third and a single in the seventh heading into the ninth. Walker retired the first two men before Kevin Rios reached on a Frost throwing error and went to third on a Freddie Thon single. Walker came out, Chris Homer in and promptly served up an RBI single to Tim Alberts that sent Thon to third. Backman followed with a sharp ground ball that Cody Ehlers dove for and knocked down at first. Second baseman Mark Minicozzi picked it up and threw to Ehlers to get the final out.

Walker (11-6) was brilliant to pick up his league-leading 11th win, allowing the one run (it was unearned) on four hits in eight-plus innings, fanning four and walking one. Anderson (1-5) took the hard-luck loss after allowing both runs (both were unearned) on six hits in six-plus innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Homer recorded one out to pick up his eighth save.

This series concluded tonight. Winnipeg will enjoy its first off day tomorrow since August 3 to rest for its final series of the regular season beginning Friday when Schaumburg arrives for the first of four games. Great seats starting at just $5 are available at all Ticketmaster locations, including the ballpark box office, by calling 780-3333 or visiting ticketmaster.ca.
