Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Schaumburg Flyers scored three times in the first two innings and the Gary SouthShore RailCats never had an answer Wednesday night as the Flyers rolled to a 5-2 win at U. S. Steel Yard, clinching a series victory and staying alive in the playoff race.
Schaumburg remained two games behind fourth place Kansas City for the fourth and final playoff spot with five games left by picking up their fourth win in a row overall and second consecutive at U. S. Steel Yard. The Flyers out-hit the RailCats 14-6 Wednesday night and never trailed, getting 7.1 solid innings from starter Dustin Glant (7-8) and hits from eight different starters.
The Flyers jumped on RailCats starter Tom Thornton (8-6) early when leadoff hitter Travis Brown walked and took second on an Antoan Richardson bunt single. Brown scored on a Richard Mercado base hit and Richardson later scored when he took home on the back end of a double steal. The Flyers got another run on a Joe Pauley RBI single in the second to build a 3-0 lead.
Glant held the RailCats to just one hit through the first three innings before Jay Pecci cracked a one-out double in the fourth. Pecci scored two batters later when Cristian Guerrero reached on an infield single. Guerrero had both RailCats RBI, getting another in the sixth when he singled home Mike Massaro from second to trim the Flyers advantage to 5-2. The Flyers had scored pair of two-out runs in the top of the sixth to build their biggest lead.
Thornton allowed five earned runs in 6.2 innings despite allowing 12 hits and four walks. Eddie De la Cruz replaced Thornton and worked the final 2.1 innings scoreless, again despite giving up two hits and two walks. The Flyers stranded 14 runners in the game, including nine in scoring position.
Guerrero was the only RailCats starter with two hits, as the 'Cats mustered only eight baserunners all night against a trio of Flyers pitchers. The RailCats did get three doubles in the game, including the 27th of the year from Massaro, who matches a single-season franchise record in doing so. Massaro's 27 doubles match the 27 doubles hit by Tanner Townsend in 2007.
Victor Ferrante and Richardson each had three hits to lead the way for Schaumburg. Ferrante tripled in the sixth, the only Flyers hit that went for extra bases all night. Ferrante and Richardson each added RBI as part of their three-hit days, and Lydon Poole and Mercado also picked up two hits.
