Schaumburg Flyers News Release
GARY, IN - Dustin Glant hurled seven and a third strong innings as the Flyers defeated the Gary ShouthShore Railcats 5-2 on Wednesday night, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
The Flyers jumped on Railcats starter Tom Thornton early on in the contest. After a Travis Brown walk started the game, Antoan Richardson delivered a bunt hit up the first base line to put runners at first and second with no outs. Richard Mercado lined a base hit into center scoring Brown and moving Richardson to third. Mercado kept the pressure on with a steal of second, and a wild throw into center field by catcher Brett Wallace scored Richardson to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead.
Glant made quick work of the Railcats in the first, the Flyers kept the scoring going into the second. A Jeff Dunbar single got things started for Schaumburg, and after a Tony Mansolino sacrifice bunt, newcomer Joe Pauley lined a base hit into right field to score Dunbar from second, making the score 3-0.
The Railcats would scratch across a run in their half of the fourth with a base hit by Cristian Guerrero, driving in shortstop Jay Pecci, who reached on a double earlier in the inning.
As the action moved to the sixth, the Flyers looked to put the game out of reach. Mansolino led off the inning with a single, and Pauley followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving Mansolino to second. Richardson picked up his teammate with a base hit up the middle to score Mansolino. Northern League Player of the Week Victor Ferrante was up next, and crushed a triple into center field to score Richardson, giving the Flyers a comfortable 5-1 lead.
Gary would add one more in the bottom half of the sixth on another Guerrero RBI, but it wouldn't be enough for the Railcats, as Glant, Alain Quijano, and closer Jason Richardson would close the door on Gary.
Glant (7-8) picked up the win, his first since August 8th. Thornton (8-6) took the loss after surrendering twelve hits in 6.2 innings, though RailCats pitchers would strand 14 Flyers on base, a season-high for Schaumburg.
The Flyers now stand at 41-50, still two games behind Kansas City for the fourth and final playoff spot. The RailCats move to 53-38.
In a battle of left handed starters tomorrow, LHP Ryan Gehring (2-1, 3.86) goes for the Flyers, with LHP Tony Cogan(7-7, 3.83) takes the bump for Gary. First pitch is at 7:00 P.M.
