Lexington Legends News Release
(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Keenyn Walker had five hits in five at bats and drove in five runs as the Kannapolis Intimidators defeated the Lexington Legends 9-4 Thursday night in front of 7,650 fans at the Legends' home opener at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Walker's 5-for-5 night, started in the second inning when he doubled to drive in Leighton Pangilinan, who had doubled earlier, giving Kannapolis a 1-0 lead.
The Intimidators broke the game open in the third. With two outs and the bases empty, Joe De Pinto tripled to center field. Kevan Smith followed with a base hit to score De Pinto. Pangilinan's single sent Smith to second base, and Mark Haddow walked, loading the bases. Walker's single to right brought in two more runs as Haddow went to third. Dusty Harvard's double scored Haddon and Walker, giving the Intimidators a 6-0 lead. Martin Medina followed with a single to right, but Emilio King threw Harvard out at the plate to end the inning.
The Legends answered with a run in the fourth when Jordan Scott singled, advanced to second on an infield out, and scored on a single by Tyler Burnett.
Lexington cut the lead to 6-3 in the fifth. With one out, Delino DeShields Jr. doubled off the wall in center field. DeShields stole third and scored when Medina's throw went into left field for an error. After Alex Todd was hit by a pitch, Jefferson Olacio relieved Daniel Webb for Kannapolis. Scott walked, sending Todd to second, and Olacio later threw two wild pitches, allowing Todd to score.
Walker singled in the sixth and was left stranded at third, but he helped the Intimidators add a run in the eighth. Walker singled for his fourth hit of the night, stole second, and scored on a two-out hit by Medina on which second baseman DeShields committed a throwing error.
Walker capped his big night with a two-run single in the ninth to give Kannapolis a 9-3 lead. The Legends scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double by Scott, who had three hits in four at bats.
Lexington starter Tanner Bushue (0-2) worked the first three innings and took the loss. Olacio (1-0), who relieved Webb with one out in the fifth and pitched two and one-third innings, got the win.
The two teams meet again Friday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
