Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The BlueClaws exploded for six runs in the first inning to take control of the game on Opening Day at FirstEnergy Park en route to an 8-1 victory over the Hagerstown Suns.
A single, two walks, two doubles and a two-out home run by catcher Logan Moore resulted in six early runs for Lakewood. Kelly Dugan's RBI double drove home Gauntlett Eldemire who scored three times in the ballgame, Aaron Altherr's double knocked in Dugan and Maikel Franco and Moore's two run homer off newly-inserted reliever Gregory Holt blew the game wide open before the defense took the field for a second time.
Mike Nesseth and Kenny Giles allowed one, unearned run between them over nine combined innings of work. With the victory, Nesseth is now 1-1 on the season and Giles earned the save with four innings of shutout relief to finish the game.
Alex Meyer was the starting pitcher for Hagerstown and was selected 23rd overall by the Washington Nationals in the 2011 MLB Draft. Despite the accolades- and five shutout innings in his first start of the season- He was knocked out of the game before completing the first inning. He pitched 0.2 innings, walking two and allowing three hits while being charged with five of the six runs the BlueClaws scored in the frame.
The BlueClaws and Suns play again on Friday in game No. 2 of the series at FirstEnergy Park. Ethan Stewart (0-1, 1.69 ERA) will battle Hagerstown's Kylin Turnbull (0-0, 6.75 ERA) in a battle of two left-handers. Stewart was the tough-luck loser on Easter Sunday when he pitched 5.1 innings and allowed one run, but the BlueClaws were shutout 4-0 by the Greenville Drive.
Gates for Friday's game open at 6:00 p.m. with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. There will be fireworks immediately following the ballgame.
