
Shorebirds' Comeback Falls Short in Home Opener

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (4-4) tallied runs in the eighth and ninth innings but fell short in the home opener, falling to the Greensboro Grasshoppers 3-2 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday night in front of 4,312 fans. The Shorebirds have lost three straight games.
The Grasshoppers struck first in the second inning. Josh Adams doubled to open the inning. James Wooster followed with a single and advanced to second on a wide throw back to the infield by John Ruettiger. Wilfredo Gimenez grounded out to second to produce the game's first run. Then, Ryan McIntyre hit a double to score Wooster.
Neither team scored between the third and seventh innings.
In the eighth, Terrence Dayleg hit a home run over the left field wall off Williams Louico to stretch the lead to 3-0.
The Shorebirds responded with their first run in the bottom of the eighth. Ruettiger reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a triple to the right-center field gap by Brenden Webb.
Down 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Shorebirds mounted a rally. Jason Esposito hit a leadoff infield single up the middle. Esposito advanced to second on a wild pitch and got to third on a groundout by Nicky Delmonico. With two outs, Mychal Givens hit a line drive single to right-center field to trim the deficit to 3-2. With runners at second and third, Glynn Davis bounced out to short to end the game.
Greensboro starter Jose Fernandez, the 14th overall pick in the 2011 draft, picked up the win in five innings. He allowed two hits and no runs. Fernandez struck out eight.
Shorebirds starter Tim Berry was the losing pitcher over five innings. He allowed five hits and two runs. Berry retired eight straight batters in the middle of his outing. Williams Louico tossed three innings of middle relief and allowed just three hits and one run. Devin Jones pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
