Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - If Hollywood were to have scripted the Augusta GreenJackets 2012 home opener, they couldn't have done better than what occurred Thursday night in front of 4,644 at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The pitching sparkled, the defense was sterling and the offense provided the thrills in a 4-0 shutout of the Savannah Sand Gnats.

The GreenJackets gave starter Chris Marlowe plenty of run support and early. Marlowe (1-0) loaded the bases in the first before striking out Sam Honeck to end the inning. Enter the Augusta hitters, who picked up a pair of runs in the inning on a Savannah error and an Elliot Blair RBI single to go up 2-0 through an inning. In the third, the lead doubled on Blair's sacrifice fly and Brett Krill's RBI single to send the GreenJackets to a 4-0 advantage.

Marlowe wouldn't need any other offensive help as he dominated the rest of his five-inning stint. His strikeout of Honeck to end the first began a string of ten straight Savannah hitters retired by Marlowe. He allowed one hit and a walk in his five shutout frames, striking out six. DeMondre Arnold and Andrew Berger followed with four shutout innings of three-hit ball to finish the job.

Savannah starter Rafael Montero (0-1) didn't throw with the same sparkle that he had the last time he faced the GreenJackets. In five innings, Montero allowed four runs - three earned - on seven hits and a walk while striking out four.

The shutout was Augusta's second of the season - a feat that took last year's team 69 games to accomplish. It also marked the GreenJackets' third straight win in a home opener.

Augusta - winners of four in their last five games - sends Adalberto Mejia (0-1, 20.25) to the mound on Friday night to face fellow lefty Alex Panteliodis (1-0, 0.00). Friday is T-Shirt Giveaway Night at the ballpark with the first 1,000 fans receiving free GreenJackets T-Shirts courtesy of Petsch Respiratory. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
