Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The BlueClaws drew 10 walks and took the lead on a Carlos De La Cruz two-run single in the fifth in topping Greenville 5-3 on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Park.
Mark Potter got the last three outs, stranding runners at second and third, to earn his sixth save of the season. The BlueClaws (14-20/43-61) have won four of five on their current homestand and have taken the first two from Greenville (16-20/48-58).
Greenville scored twice in the second inning with the help of four Kevin Gowdy walks. Tyler Dearden's RBI single was their lone hit in the inning while Grant Williams walked with the bases loaded to score the second run.
Gowdy came out after 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out two.
The BlueClaws got a run back in the third on a single by Yerwin Trejo. Then, Lakewood busted through for three runs in the fifth to take the lead. Carlos De La Cruz's two-runs single put the BlueClaws in front and Lakewood added a run on Trejo's SAC fly and second RBI of the game.
After Andrew Schultz (five) and Gilmael Troya (six) combined to throw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief before turning this over Tom Sutera. The right-hander from Siena, in his BlueClaws debut, gave up one run in three innings before Potter threw the scoreless ninth.
Troya (5-0) earned the win for Lakewood.
The 10 walks drawn by Lakewood were the most drawn by the BlueClaws since a May 15, 2013 game against Delmarva at FirstEnergy Park. Eight of the nine starters drew walks with Rafael Marchan and Hutner Stovall each drawing two. Four of the five BlueClaws runs reached on a free pass.
Tyler Dearden, a Mount Holly native, had three hits and drove in two but struck out to end the game.
Greenville starter Chris Machamer (4-7) gave up four runs in 4.1 innings and took the loss.
The teams continue their series on Sunday at 1:05 pm. RHP Rafi Gonell (3-1) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Hunter Haworth (2-5).
