Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds tossed their third shutout of the homestand as they blanked the Charleston RiverDogs 5-0 on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Matt Hammonds (3-2) earned the win for the Shorebirds (25-11, 73-32) with four scoreless innings of relief, allowing just a hit and a walk while striking out six. Josh Maciejewski (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the RiverDogs (14-22, 51-55) as he went six innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while punching out two.
Delmarva plated the first run of the game in the second. Jaylen Ferguson worked a walk to begin the inning and Ryne Ogren followed with a single. After Jean Carlos Encarnacion bounced into a fielder's choice wiping Ferguson off the base paths, Seamus Curran bounced to first, moving Ogren to third and Encarnacion to second. On ball four to Cody Roberts, the pitch got away from the catcher allowing Ogren to score from third on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Shorebirds.
A three-run seventh provided breathing room for Delmarva. Johnny Rizer started the frame with a base hit and Jaylen Ferguson moved him to third with a line drive single to center. Ogren then rapped a grounder to short, and Charleston's Oswald Peraza tried to throw out Rizer at the plate, but the throw was late and wild allowing Rizer to score and Ferguson to go to third with the score 2-0 Delmarva. After Encarnacion walked to load the bases, Curran bounced out to first allowing Ferguson to cross the plate to put the Shorebirds up 3-0. Roberts capped off the frame with a sacrifice fly to left, pushing the Delmarva lead to 4-0.
Another run in the eighth helped put the game to bed for the Shorebirds. After Adam Hall was hit by a pitch, Johnny Rizer sent him all the way home as he scalded a double into right center field, giving the game its final line of 5-0 Delmarva.
Rizer spearheaded the Shorebirds' attack, finishing 3-for-4 with an double, run, and RBI. Ogren contributed with an RBI and two runs scored, going 1-for-4. Zach Watson also picked up a single, giving him a hit in each of his first five games with Delmarva.
Peraza had half of Charleston's four hits, going 2-for-4.
Dallas Litscher began the shutout bid for Delmarva but did not factor into the decision. In his Shorebirds' debut, Litscher fired three shutout innings, giving up two hits and walk while striking out four. Jhon Peluffo finished off the Shorebirds' 15th clean sheet of the season with a scoreless eighth and ninth.
The Shorebirds go for the early series win against the RiverDogs on Sunday evening. Delmarva sends Ryan Wilson (5-3, 2.72) to the mound against Harold Cortijo (4-2, 2.53) for Charleston. First pitch is slated for 5:05 with gates opening at 4:00. Sunday at Perdue Stadium is another Perdue Strike Out Hunger Sunday with Kids Run the Bases after the game presented by Chili's. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 4:50 with Will DeBoer and Sam Jellinek on the call.
