Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - Brooks Marlow drove home Aaron Mizell with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the Connecticut Tigers 7-6 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Monday night, in walk-off fashion.

Tri-City first took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Johnny Sewald singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third base, before coming home on a single by Marlow.

The stolen base by Sewald was his 27th of the season, which broke the ValleyCats' franchise record for swiped bags in a single season, set by Josh Anderson, in 2003.

One inning later, Cesar Carrasco smashed an 0-1 pitch from Connecticut right-hander Ryan Castellanos for over the left-center field wall for his third home run of the year, putting Tri-City ahead by the score of 2-0.

Although the Tigers scored twice in the third inning, and twice in the fourth, to jump on top 4-2, the ValleyCats fought back.

Their rebound began in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Keach Ballard drove home Anthony Hermelyn with a ground ball to second base. Then, Alexander Melendez singled to left field to lead off the bottom of the seventh, before scoring on a two-run home run by Kolbey Carpenter into the left field bullpen.

Carpenter's long ball, which came on a 0-2 pitch from Tigers left-hander Locke St. John, was his second of the season, and gave the 'Cats a 5-4 lead.

Ballard added to the Tri-City lead in the eighth, doubling with one out, then coming home to score on a wild pitch.

Unfortunately, Connecticut third baseman Josh Lester tied the game with a two-out, two-run double in the next half inning, to send the game into the bottom of the ninth tied 6-6.

Leading off the bottom of the ninth inning was Mizell, who doubled on a line drive to center field, then advanced to third on a ground out by Carpenter.

That brought up Marlow, who grounded a 0-1 pitch from Tigers reliever Jake Shull over the pitchers mound into center field, driving home Mizell, and giving the 'Cats their fifth walk-off win of the 2015 season.

The victory gave Ed Romero his 126th win as the manager of the Tri-City ValleyCats. That total is only one fewer than the franchise-record of 127, set by Gregg Lengbehn, who managed the team from 2004-2006.

Romero will get his first chance at tying Lengbehn's record when Tri-City hosts Connecticut at 7 p.m., in the second game of this three-game set.
