Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - After an offensive outage over the weekend as the Lowell Spinners losing skid hit six, the Spinners bats awoke with the arrival of the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 13-hit, 10-run outburst for a 10-6 win Monday evening at LeLacheur Park.

Lowell (31-31) jumped out to a three run lead in the first inning. Luis Alexander Basabe led off the game with a walk. A Chad De La Guerra single advanced Basabe to third and a Victor Acosta double plated both to give the Spinners a 2-0 lead. Kyri Washington followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 3-0, Lowell.

The Spinners expanded the lead in the third with a two-out rally, taking advantage of some heads up play by Acosta, who was hit-by-a-pitch with two outs. Washington followed with an infield single and when the throw went wide, Acosta came all the way around to score from first base. Josh Ockimey came through with a run scoring double to push the lead to 5-0.

The offense poured things on in the fourth inning. Jhon Nunez and Jeremy Rivera led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Basabe followed with a single to score Nunez and a De La Guerra sacrifice fly plated Rivera before a bases loaded walk by Tyler Spoon made it 8-0.

Vermont (26-34) got on the board in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Trace Loehr that rocketed off the third level signage in rightfield to cut the Spinners lead to 8-2.

After the Spinners got another run in the fifth, this time on a wild pitch by Boston College alum John Gorman, the Lake Monsters offense tried to come to life in the late innings. The Lake Monsters plated a run in the eighth that the Spinners would equal in the bottom half of the inning on Ockimey's third home run of the season.

Things got interesting in the ninth when Chris Iriart was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. A Skye Bolt double gave the Lake Monsters second and third with no-out and Steven Pallares hit a home run off the video board in left field, knocking out not only Spinners reliever Danny Zandona but also half of the videoboard. Trevor Kelley would come in to retire Vermont from there and secure the 10-6 win.

Rivera led the offensive onslaught with three hits, two runs and a stolen base, while Basabe, Washington and Ockimey all had two hit nights. Acosta and Ockimey each drove in two in the win.

Jose Almonte (3-3, 4.08) got the win, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks in five innings. He struck out five. Zandona allowed four runs on five hits in three innings, striking out four. Kelley closed out the win with a scoreless ninth, striking out one.

The Spinners look to make it two-in-a-row Tuesday night when Kevin Steen (0-1, 2.75) gets the ball for the 7:05 first pitch.
