Tri-City Walks off with Win

TROY, NY-The Connecticut Tigers (28-30) fell in heartbreaking fashion 7-6 on Monday night to the Tri-City ValleyCats (34-27). Brooks Marlow singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth to lift Tri-City.

Connecticut trailed 6-4 heading to the top of the ninth with Jacob Dorris who was a perfect 6-6 in save opportunities on the mound. With second basemen Pat Mackenzie (1-5, 2 R) on first designated hitter Cam Gibson (2-5) had an infield single. As first basemen Will Allen (1-4, 2B, RBI) struck out both runners stole to put runners on second and third with two outs. The next batter was third basemen Josh Lester (2-5, 3 RBI) and he doubled home both runners to tie the game at 6-6. Zac Grotz (4-2) came on and got the final out in the inning.

The tie didn't last long with Jake Shull (0-4) on the mound. The first man for Tri-City in the bottom of the ninth was leftfielder Aaron Mizell (2-4) and he doubled. He moved to third with one out and scored on the Marlow (2-5, 2 RBI) single.

Tri-City scored single runs in each of the first two innings against Tigers starter Ryan Castellanos. The second came on a home run by Cesar Carrasco his third of the year.

Connecticut tied the game in third as ValleyCats starter Chris Murphy ran into trouble. In the inning Allen and Lester had RBI hits. The Tigers then took the lead 4-2 in the fourth with another two runs scored on hits from shortstop Keaton Jones and leftfielder Jacob Kapstein.

The lead was short lived and with the score now 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh and Locke St. John on the mound Tri-City designated hitter Kolbey Carpenter launched a two-run home run to left field for a 5-4 ValleyCat lead. It was his second homer of the year.

Castellanos pitched the first four and a third innings for Connecticut as he allowed two runs on six hits and a season high five strikeouts. St. John pitched the next three and a third allowing three runs on five hits. Shull lasted just a third of an inning taking the loss.

Murphy pitched three and two thirds for Tri-City and gave up four runs on seven hits. Ryan Deemes was very good in relief as he threw three and a third scoreless innings. Dorris allowed two runs in an inning and two thirds while Grotz picked up the win throwing third of an inning.

Connecticut will play the second game of a three game series on the road against Tri-City on Tuesday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
