Auburn Doubledays Game Notes

August 24, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Auburn Doubledays News Release

Tonight's Game: The Doubledays host the Scrappers for game one of a three-game series at Falcon Park. This marks the first of two times Mahoning Valley will visit Auburn this season. The Scrappers will visit again later this season from September 2nd until September 4th.

Last Night's Game: The Doubledays hosted the Crosscutters and fell 9-8. The Doubledays were down 9-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth and rallied, but ultimately the comeback fell short. Jorge Tillero launched his first homer of the season, a two-run blast to left, but grounded out to second to end the game with Dalton Dulin on second. Taylor Hearn's 5 ER broke a streak of 10 straight games without an Auburn starter giving up more than 3 ER.

Bullpen Domination: Auburn's 'pen has been dominant over the course of the season recording a 3.25 ERA (97 ER in 269.0 IP). The starting pitchers haven't been as fortunate recording a 5.16 ERA (136 ER in 237.1 IP). Also of note, the Doubledays have surrendered 130 runs in the first three innings combined (45, 36, and 49 in the first through third respectively). Those 130 runs account for exactly 45% of the runs Auburn's pitching staff has given up this year (292 total).

The Wild Card Chase: With 15 games left in the season, the Doubledays sit 6.5 games back in the wild card race. State College currently leads the wild card chase with the following teams behind them: West Virginia 2.5 GB, Hudson Valley 3.0 GB, Lowell 3.5 GB, Aberdeen 3.5 GB, Connecticut 3.5 GB, Brooklyn 4.0 GB, Mahoning Valley 5.5 GB, Auburn 6.5 GB, Vermont 6.5 GB, and Batavia 8.0 GB.

This Dude is On Fire: Since not playing from July 25th until August 6th, Max Schrock has played in 15 games. In his first game back, the infielder went 0-1 on August 6th. In the 14 games since, he has raised his batting average from .246 to .301 and has a hit in 13 of 15, including an 11-game hit streak in the middle.

These Cleats Aren't Made For Walking: Over their last seven games, the Doubledays have drawn just six walks, including none in three of seven games. This season, Auburn as a whole has drawn 167 walks, which is second fewest in the New York-Penn League. Aberdeen has the fewest with just 142.

#A(BLANK)SHY: In last night's game, two Doubledays finished one leg shy of the cycle. Kelvin Gutierrez went 3-3 with a single, double, and triple, finishing a home run shy. Jorge Tillero went 3-5 with a single, double, and homer, finishing a triple shy. No Doubleday has hit for the cycle this year and no opponent has hit for the cycle against the 'Days.

The Season Series: The Doubledays are 2-1 against the Scrappers this season thanks to a three-game series back in mid-July in Niles, Ohio. Auburn took game one 11-3, dropped game two 4-3, and won the rubber match 6-3 in a rain-shortened seven-inning game. The two teams will play six more games this year including tonight.
