Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Brooklyn, NY (8/24/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones by a score of 4-2 on Monday evening at MCU Park. With the victory, the Renegades saw their record improve to 31-30 while Brooklyn fell to 29-32.
Neither team scored a run through the first five innings as both Hudson Valley's starting pitcher Michael Velasquez and Brooklyn's starter Tyler Badamo kept both team's offenses in check. Velasquez allowed just four hits in his five innings of work and struck out five batters in his start.
Hudson Valley second baseman Jake Cronenworth led off the top of the sixth inning with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Oscar Sanay. Cronenworth scored later in the inning on a RBI infield single from Manny Sanchez to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
Brooklyn picked up two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as right fielder Jeff Diehl and first baseman Zach Mathieu each singled and moved to second and third base on a balk. Diehl scored as catcher Brandon Brosher reached first base on a passed ball after striking out and Mathieu scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by center fielder Enmanuel Zabala, giving Brooklyn a 2-1 lead.
But the Renegades struck back quickly in the top of the seventh inning as third baseman Alex Schmidt singled and scored on a RBI double from catcher Taylor Hawkins to tie the score at 2-2. After Cronenworth singled and stole second base, Sanay drove in Hawkins on a RBI single with Cronenworth scoring after the throw from the outfield on Sanay's single was not handled cleanly by Brosher.
Hudson Valley maintained their 4-2 lead over the last three innings as John Williams pitched one scoreless inning of relief and Brandon Koch tossed the last two frames to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Cris Crisostomo (2-0) earned the win in relief for the Renegades after allowing a pair of un-earned runs in one inning of work. After Badamo allowed a run in six innings of work, Nicco Blank (0-4) took the loss as he allowed three runs in three innings of work.
Notes: Brandon Koch has been a steady reliever for the Renegades over the past few weeks as he has not allowed an earned run in seven straight appearances dating back to July 31st at Auburn. Over that stretch, Koch has struck out 22 batters over 17 and two-thirds innings and picked up three saves while allowing just nine hits.
The Renegades return to Dutchess Stadium to host Brooklyn on Tuesday, August 25th at 7:05pm. Tuesday is "Ponder This Night" at Dutchess Stadium as well as AAA Discount Night, where fans receive $2 off their ticket order with their AAA Membership Card.
