LOWELL, MA --- The Lowell Spinners scored eight runs over the first four innings and went on to snap their six-game losing streak with a 10-6 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Monday night at LeLecheur Park.
The Spinners led 3-0 before Vermont starter Kyle Friedrichs could record an out in the bottom of the first as Luis Alexander Basabe walked, Chad De la Guerra singled, Victor Acota doubled both home and Kyri Washingtonn singled to left to score Acosta with the third run. Lowell added two more runs in the third to knock Friedrichs (1-3) out of the game, then added three more runs in the fourth off Lake Monsters reliever Jared Lyons.
Trace Loehr got Vermont on the scoreboard with a two-run homer in the fifth inning for his second home run of the season. Loehr, who has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games to raise average to .262, added a single in the eighth and scored on a Brett Siddall RBI double. Then down 10-3 in the ninth inning, the Lake Monsters got a three-run homer from Steven Pallares for his second home run of the year to cut the deficit to four. Vermont is now 10-17 when hitting a home run including just 2-3 when hitting two homers in a game.
Vermont's Bubba Derby retired eight of the first nine batters he faced before allowing a two-out solo home run to Ockimey in the eighth inning. The home run snapped a 16 1/3 scoreless inning streak for Derby, who had not allowed a run since a solo home run on July 26th and has now given up just three runs over 29 1/3 innings (0.91 ERA). The Ockimey homer also dropped the Lake Monsters record to 3-19 when giving up at least one home run to their opponent.
Starter Jose Almonte (3-3) allowed two runs on three hits with five walks and five strikeouts over five innings to earn the win for Lowell (31-31), which along with snapping a six-game losing streak improved its record to 6-1 against Vermont this season. Jeremy Rivera was 3-for-4 with two runs, while Basabe 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for the Spinners. Siddall, Bolt and Loehr each had two hits for Vermont (26-34), which has lost six of its last seven games.
The Lake Monsters and Spinners will play the second of the three-game series at Lowell on Tuesday before Vermont wraps up the roadtrip on Wednesday at LeLecheur. The Lake Monsters then return to historic Centennial Field for a three-game series against the Stedler Division-leading Tri-City ValleyCats Thursday-Saturday.
