Walk-Off Heartbreak for Wilmington in Fayetteville
June 1, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Fayetteville, NC - Scott Schreiber's solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning handed the Wilmington Blue Rocks a 2-1 walk-off loss to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Saturday at Segra Stadium. The Rocks went just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the defeat. Still, Wilmington's magic number to clinch a first-half CL North crown dropped to 10 with 14 contests remaining.
Schreiber's lead-off long ball came on a 1-2 pitch against Rocks reliever Robert Garcia. It was a tough way for the game to end for a Wilmington relief corps that had put together a fantastic evening. The combo of Josh Dye, Holden Capps and Garcia combined to strikeout five and yield just five hits over 6.2 scoreless frames entering the ninth. The Woodpeckers finished the night 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, with five of those failed attempts coming against the bullpen.
Blue Crew starter Daniel Lynch allowed a run for the first time since May 9, yielding a one-out double to Colton Shaver that plated Jacob Myers. Lynch got out of the frame without further damage, but departed an inning later with apparent arm discomfort.
Wilmington used some two-out magic to tie the game in the eighth. With two away and the bases empty, Dennicher Carrasco got the rally jumpstarted with a single to right. MJ Melendez followed with a triple into the right-field corner that pulled the Blue Crew even.
Fayetteville starter Brett Conine fanned 12 and walked only one as he posted six goose eggs on the scoreboard in a no-decision. Leovanny Rodriguez followed with a scoreless seventh before surrendering the lead in the eighth. Cesar Rosado worked a one-two-three ninth to get the win.
The Blue Crew continue their seven-game road trip at Myrtle Beach on Sunday. Southpaw Kris Bubic takes the mound for Wilmington as first pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. Fans can catch all the action with the Voice of the Blue Rocks, Cory Nidoh on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
The Blue Rocks lost for the first time in five series on Saturday. The Rocks had captured four straight four-game sets entering this series at Fayetteville- having taken three-of-four from Frederick, Potomac, Salem and Myrtle Beach.
Four has been the magic number for the Wilmington offense in 2019. When the Rocks score four times in a game they are 20-2 on the year. Conversely, when Wilmington manages just three scores or fewer in an affair the team is only 14-19.
Entering Saturday Wilmington had excelled in close contests this season. The Blue Crew lead the Carolina League with 25 games decided by a single score in 2019 and have played 36 affairs with a margin of victory of two-or-less. The Rocks are an impressive 27-9 in those close calls including 20-5 in one-run decisions. The walk-off defeat was Wilmington's second of the year.
Daniel Lynch had his scoreless streak end at 22.1 frames on Saturday thanks to Colton Shaver's one-out double in the first. It was the only run of the game and led to a tough-luck loss for Lynch. That still wasn't the worst part of his night. The lefty departed the game with one away in the second due to apparent arm discomfort. The reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week had gone three straight outings without surrendering a score.
The Blue Rocks have taken a weird path offensively to first place in the CL North standings for 48 of the first 58 days of the 2019 season. The Blue Crew managed just two hits on Thursday and were out-hit on Wednesday despite getting the win. On Saturday Wilmington went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. The Rocks have produced fewer hits than their foe in 17 of the team's 34 victories this season. They also have finished with five hits or less 26 times on the year, yet have won 13 of those affairs. Wilmington is also hitting just .186 on the season with runners in scoring position. Overall, the Blue Crew are last in the CL in runs, hits, batting average slugging percentage and on-base percentage.
