New Orleans VooDoo News Release

The New Orleans VooDoo added OL/DL Hans Olsen to their roster today through the Arena Football LeagueÂ’s Dispersal Draft. The VooDoo selected Olsen from the Indiana Firebirds with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the draft, which consisted of the 29 players remaining on the Carolina Cobras, Detroit Fury and Indiana Firebirds rosters.

“We are excited to be able to acquire a lineman of Hans’ caliber in today’s draft,” said coach Mike Neu. “Hans will be an excellent addition to our team because of his experience on both the offensive line and defensive line in both the NFL and Arena Football League. He will help us out at the center position on offense and at the nose guard position on defense.”

Olsen (6-4, 298, Brigham Young) appeared in 16 games for the Firebirds in 2004, playing an integral part on the top-ranked rushing offense in the AFL. Defensively, he recorded five tackles, one sack, one tackle for a loss, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. Prior to joining the Firebirds, Olsen spent the 2001 season with the Indianapolis Colts, making their roster as an undrafted free agent defensive tackle, appearing in two games. Olsen switched to guard the following off-season and spent 2002 on IndianapolisÂ’ practice squad. Olsen was recognized as an All-Mountain West Conference selection at defensive tackle at BYU. He is the nephew of NFL Hall of Fame lineman Merlin Olsen.
