Soul draft Strath Haven grad Lamar Campbell
October 14, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Philadelphia Soul News Release
PHILADELPHIA â The Philadelphia Soul drafted WR/DB Lamar Campbell in the second round (19th overall) of the Arena Football League dispersal draft on Thursday. Campbell, a Chester, PA native, returns home to the area his football career began as a Big 33 participant for Pennsylvania in 1993.
Campbell, a Strath Haven High School grad, spent his AFL rookie season with the Indiana Firebirds a year ago and has four years of playing experience in the NFL. From 1998 to 2002 he appeared in 63 games and started 18 with the Detroit Lions. In 2000, the 6-footer grabbed his first career interception against Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers, returning it 42 yards for a touchdown.
His combination of playing experience, size and speed caught Soul Head Coach Michael Trigg's attention.
"We were pleasantly surprised he was available at the 19th spot in the dispersal," Trigg said. "I have been familiar with Lamar's career during my coaching stint in Michigan while Lamar was with the Lions. He is an NFL corner/safety with a physical nature and aggressiveness.
"We are hoping he can be a match-up DB for us to handle bigger offensive players the Soul had trouble defending in 2004."
Campbell attended the University of Wisconsin from 1994-97, playing primarily as a cornerback. He finished his college career ranked fifth in school history in passes broken up and tied for ninth with eight interceptions.
He was an All-Catholic League and All-Area selection as a senior at Strath Haven and was also a two-time All-American in track and field.
Season tickets for the Philadelphia Soul's sophomore season are on sale now. For more information on season tickets call 1-888-PHIL-AFL or visit www.philadelphiasoul.com. The Soul led the Arena Football League in attendance averaging over 16,866 fans per home game, including six sellouts.
