Colorado Crush News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Crush added a league-high four players, including a wide receiver/defensive back, a wide receiver/linebacker, a defensive specialist and an offensive/defensive lineman, during the Arena Football League's dispersal draft that was held earlier today.
All four Crush selections come from the Indiana Firebirds roster - WR/LB Andy McCullough with the third pick (via Philadelphia), former Crush DS Delvin Hughley with the ninth pick (via Los Angeles), offensive/defensive lineman Tom Burke with the 12th pick and WR/DB Jon Pendergrass with the 29th pick in the draft.
The dispersal draft was conducted via telephone and players available in the draft were those who were under contract with the Carolina Cobras, Detroit Fury or Indiana Firebirds, each of whom folded following the 2004 season.
Overall, 29 players were selected in the draft, with the expansion Nashville Kats selecting 2004 AFL Rookie of the Year quarterback Adrian McPherson with the first pick. The Crush added a league-high four players in the draft, thanks to previous trades that landed them the Philadelphia Soul's third overall selection and the Los Angeles Avengers' ninth selection in addition to their own two draft choices.
McCullough (6-4, 220, Tennessee), who will be entering his fourth season in the AFL, started last season with Georgia before being traded to Indiana on March 11. He spent the previous two seasons with Dallas (2002-03), and had his best AFL season in 2003 when he caught 96 passes for 1,216 yards and 24 touchdowns for the Desperados.
Hughley (5-11, 195, Jacksonville State) re-joins the Crush after appearing in all 16 games with the team during their inaugural 2003 season. Hughley started 15 games at defensive specialist as a rookie that season, leading the team with 71.5 tackles. Hughley was traded by the Crush to Indiana along with Chris Janek on June 26, 2003, in a trade that brought head coach Mike Dailey to Colorado. Hughley appeared in all 16 games with Indiana in 2004, ranking eighth in the AFL in tackles (78.0), and tied for 10th in passes defended (16).
Burke (6-3, 275, Wisconsin) and Pendergrass (6-0, 205, Southern Illinois) were both property of Indiana, but neither has played in the AFL. Burke was the 22nd selection of the third round (83rd overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft by Arizona and spent four seasons with the Cardinals (1999-02). Pendergrass signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2002 as a wide receiver and subsequently played for the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe in 2003. While in NFL Europe Pendergrass made the move to defensive back and participated in training this year with the New York Jets before being waived on August 19.
With the addition of the four players today, the Crush roster now stands at 33 players currently under contract for the 2005 season, with a maximum of 37 players that can be invited to training camp. Camp will commence the first week of January.
The Colorado Crush kick off their third season in January and deposits for season tickets are currently being accepted. The Crush sales staff is available for renewals and new ticket deposits from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday at (303)-352-1000.
