Storm select three players in Dispersal Draft
October 14, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA, FL -- The five-time World Champion Tampa Bay Storm selected three players in the 2004 Arena Football League Dispersal Draft, including a pair of fullback/linebackers and an offensive/defensive lineman.
The Storm selected FB/LB Jarrod Pinright with the tenth selection in the draft. The team then took OL/DL Mike Sutton with the 27th pick and FB/LB Jeff Cogell with the 44th and final pick in the draft. All three players were selected from the roster of the now-defunct Indiana Firebirds.
In all, the draft included 29 players who remained under contract with the Firebirds, Carolina Cobras, and Detroit Fury. All three teams ceased operations following the 2004 season.
"I think we improved our team today," said Storm head coach Tim Marcum. "All three of these guys played in Indiana for (Storm assistant coach) Steve DeBerg and he was high on all three. One of our objectives this offseason was to add pass rushers, and I think we did that in this draft."
Pinright (6-2, 240, Texas A&M) played in his first AFL season in 2004. He played in 11 games and led the team with 4.6 yards per carry. He finished with 114 yards and three touchdowns on 25 rushing attempts. Defensively he had 13.5 tackles, including 0.5 sack, with two pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Sutton (6-4, 272, LSU) was one of the top rookie linemen in the league in 2004 and was one of the top rated players in the Dispersal Draft. However, he suffered a cut tendon in his leg during the off-season and will likely miss the first few weeks of the 2005 season. Sutton led the Firebirds with 3.0 sacks and finished with 20.0 tackles, three forced fumbles, and a pass breakup.
Cogell (6-2, 260, America International) completed his second AFL season in 2004. He played in five games for the Firebirds last season, rushing 12 times for 44 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively he recorded 6.5 tackles.
The Storm have now added seven players to their roster since the October 1 signing period began. In addition to the three players drafted, the Storm have signed free agent lineman Ricky Hall, wide receiver/linebacker Lawrence Samuels, and wide receiver/defensive backs Lynaris Elpheage and Omar Laurence.
The Storm kick off the 2005 season in January at the St. Pete Times Forum. The Storm are looking to extend their league-record streak of postseason appearances to 15 seasons. Tampa bay has never failed to advance to the AFL playoffs.
Season tickets for the 2005 season are on sale now at the St. Pete Times Forum Box Office. Storm season tickets may also be purchased by calling (813) 301-6600 or online at www.tampabaystorm.com.
