VooDoo announces 2004 roster

In preparation for their inaugural season opener at the Philadelphia Soul on Sunday, February 8, the New Orleans VooDoo trimmed its roster for the 2004 Arena Football League season to the league mandated limit by waiving eight players and placing three on the Injured Reserve List.

The 2004 inaugural VooDoo roster presents a mix of 15 Arena Football League veterans and nine rookies.

In order to reach the league mandated roster limit, the team waived WR/LB Terrell Harris, QB Lionel Hayes, OL/DL Tony Henderson, DS Gana Joseph, WR/DB Jacques Rumph, DS Chandler Smith and OS Kenny Solomon. Team also placed OL/DL D.J. Cooper, WR/DB Luke Leverson and OL/DL Sean Powell on Injured Reserve. Cooper and Powell will be ineligible to come off the list until after New Orleans' first two regular season games. Leverson's placement is retroactive to January 12, so he would be placed on the active roster at any time.

The roster breakdown by position follows: Kicker (1) - Brian Schmitz; Quarterback (2) - Jermaine Alfred and John Fitzgerald; Offensive Specialists (2) - Aaron Bailey and Ira Gooch; FB/LB (3) - Michael Blair, Dan Curran and Mario Evans; WR/DB (2) -- Lamont Moore and Calvin Spears; WR/LB (2) - Anthony Collins and Tremaine Neal; Defensive Specialists (3) - Calvin Coleman, Monty Montgomery and Chris Pointer; OL/DL (9) - Jason Berger, B.J. Cohen, Menson Holloway, Gaylon Hyder, Sacha Lancaster, Tim Martin, Bruce McClure, Adam Metts and Abdul-Salam Noah.

The VooDoo will have a four-man practice squad. This will be announced on Monday.

The VooDoo open up their inaugural season on Sunday, February 8, at the expansion Philadelphia Soul. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and will be televised on NBC (WDSU-6 in New Orleans). It can be heard on WWL 870 AM. Chris Kenyon will handle play by play and New Orleans Saints and VooDoo Executive Vice President/General Manager will serve as color analyst for the opener. Various Saints coach, front office staffers and players will rotate as radio color analysts throughout the season.

The VooDoo is scheduled to have 10 games televised on NBC this season, including the home opener on Saturday, February 14, at the New Orleans Arena versus the Indiana Firebirds. The remainder of the games will be televised on Cox Sports Television.

Often recognized as one of the nation's most affordable and fan-friendly sports leagues, the Arena Football League will being its 18th season in February 2004, making it the second-longest running football league in U.S. history, trailing only the NFL.
