New Orleans VooDoo announces practice squad

The New Orleans VooDoo announced that they have signed WR/LB Kerry Hayes, QB Lionel Hayes, OS Jacques Rumph and DS Denario Smalls to the team's four-man practice squad.

Kerry Hayes, 5-9, 180, is a five-year AFL veteran who most recently played for the Carolina Cobras under VooDoo Coach Mike Neu in 2002, recording 23 receptions for 188 yards and one touchdown in seven games. Lionel Hayes, 6-4, 230, participated in training camp for the VooDoo and will serve as the team's third quarterback. A former Grambling star, Hayes played for the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe, starting two games in 2001. Rumph, 5-8, 180, participated in training camp for the VooDoo after spending the 2002 and 2003 seasons with the Macon Knights of af2, where he played for VooDoo Defensive Coordinator, Kevin Porter. Smalls, 5-9, 185, also played for Porter with the Macon Knights from 2001-03, racking up 223 tackles, 23 interceptions, 74 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. Smalls participated in training camp for the San Jose SaberCats in 2002 and has served as the defensive backs coach for Pikeville (Ky.) College the past two offseasons.

The VooDoo open up their inaugural season on Sunday, February 8, at the expansion Philadelphia Soul. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and will be televised on NBC (WDSU-6 in New Orleans). The game can also be heard on WWL 870 AM. Chris Kenyon will handle play by play and New Orleans Saints and VooDoo Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis will serve as color analyst for the opener. Various Saints coaches, front office executives and players will rotate as radio color analysts throughout the season.
