Columbus Clippers News Release
Voices of Cooper Stadium
The Columbus Clippers are celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of The Coop by sharing with you "The 75 Voices of Cooper Stadium". We hope to capture some of its voices through the unique insights of 75 people representing various ages and perspectives.
John Romonoski, Former player
What time period is your affiliation with Cooper Stadium?
I was a starting pitcher in Cooper Stadium from 1953-1954 for the Red Birds - their final seasons in Columbus.
What is your fondest memory of Cooper Stadium?
My fondest memory is my first outing in Cooper Stadium. I threw a complete game, 4-hit shutout against St. Paul striking out nine batters along the way. I couldn't have scripted a better start. I won my next two games after that as well.
What is your favorite physical aspect of Cooper Stadium?
When I played, I really liked the bullpen location down the left field line. You were close to the fans, which was fun, but you could also keep an eye on the game. The best part though is when they would drive you to the mound in a Corvette instead of a regular bullpen car.
If the seats at Cooper Stadium could talk, what do you think they would say?
I think the seats would talk about the hundreds of ballplayers that have used Cooper Stadium as a proving ground to get to the majors. Players like Dizzy and Paul Dean and Enos Slaughter.
Describe something about Cooper Stadium you think other people should (or would want to) know about the ballpark.
I think people should be aware of all the long-time, very knowledgeable, season ticket holders that attend almost every game. Baseball at Cooper Stadium is important to them and they almost act as unofficial historians of Columbus baseball.
If you could take one thing from Cooper Stadium to the new Huntington Park, what would it be?
I would definitely move home plate to Huntington Park. It's where all the action is - there's no more important piece in my mind.
Please describe a Clippers game at Cooper Stadium through your eyes. Tell us what you see, what you hear and what you think.
I see games at Cooper Stadium represented as opportunity. Players in awe of the opportunity they have to advance their careers and in awe of the venue they get to "go to work" in every day.
What do you believe is unique about a Clippers baseball game at Cooper Stadium that differentiates it from other sporting events or venues?
I think it's unique because its one of the very few complete minor league ballparks. It has everything the organization and the fans need. It's a nice stadium - plain and simple.
If you could take one part of Cooper Stadium for yourself, what would it be?
If given the opportunity I'd take either home plate or the pitching rubber...or both! As a pitcher I made my living as a result of both.
What are you most excited about in regard to the new Huntington Park?
I'm excited about a couple of things including a good location, modern facility upgrades and a new level of excitement from Columbus fans. Most importantly, I'm hoping the move will result in better media coverage of the team. Right now, fans that can't make it to the game are lucky if they can even find a box score or quick recap in the news the next day.
