IL names players of the week

Published on June 11, 2007 under International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Buffalo third baseman Andy Marte and Charlotte pitcher Gavin Floyd have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from June 4-10. Both Marte and Floyd are the second members of their respective clubs to win an IL weekly award this season following Bisons' hurler Sean Smith (May 14-20) and Knights' third baseman Josh Fields (May 21-27).

Over the past seven days Buffalo third baseman ANDY MARTE slugged four home runs to go along with 11 RBI, both tops in the International League to win IL Batter-of-the-Week honors for the second time in his career (June 12-18, 2006). Marte also smoked the rest of the field with a 1.038 slugging percentage, coming on the strength of seven extra-base hits. Overall Marte went 12-26 (.462). Despite having played in only 24 games at the Triple-A level, he is now tied for 3rd on the Bisons with seven homers. Marte, who is hitting .293 on the year, hit safely in all eight games in which he played this week, including a 3-3 effort in Game 1 of yesterday's doubleheader in Richmond. Marte also clubbed his fourth homer of the week in that contest and collected 3 RBI. Marte is in his second stint this year with the Herd, following a 20-Day rehab April 29-May 18. On May 28 Marte was optioned from Cleveland, since which time he's hit .327 with 5 HR and 17 RBI in 14 games.

23-year-old Andy Marte is in his seventh professional season, and his second as a member of the Cleveland organization. Marte was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in a trade in January 2006, less than two months after being traded to Boston from Atlanta. He's played in 90 games at the Major League level, including 16 this year with the Indians (hitting .180 in 50 at-bats). He was the winner of the 2006 Triple-A Home Run Derby in Toledo. Marte is a native of Villa Tapia, Dominican Republic.

Charlotte right-hander GAVIN FLOYD allowed only two earned runs in 15.0 innings of work this week to earn IL Pitcher-of-the-Week honors. Floyd struck out 14 batters, 2nd in the IL only to Louisville's Mike Gosling during the week. His 15.0 IP tied for the League's high, along with another Bats' pitcher, Phil Dumatrait, Floyd's opponent in his start on Tuesday, June 5. Both Floyd and Dumatrait pitched 8.0 innings of one-run baseball that evening in a game ultimately won by Charlotte 2-1 in 10 frames. Floyd struck out six men in his second straight outing, but missed a chance to win three straight starts with the no decision. Yesterday afternoon, Floyd took the hill against IL West-leading Indianapolis and League wins-leader Bryan Bullington (9). The day would belong to Floyd, who struck out eight in 7.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned). Bullington left the game after the 1st innings due to shoulder discomfort, and the Knights won 4-3. The victory was Floyd's fourth of the year, tying him with Heath Phillips and Lance Broadway for the most on the Charlotte club.

24-year-old Gavin Floyd was the fourth overall pick in the 2001 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He was traded by the Phillies to the White Sox in December 2006 in a deal for pitcher Freddy Garcia. Floyd has appeared in 19 games at the Major League level, all with Philadelphia, going 7-5 with a 6.96 ERA. Floyd is a native of Annapolis, MD.
