Tacoma Rainiers News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Infielder Daniel Vogelbach swatted three home runs as the Tacoma Rainiers (18-20) split a doubleheader with the Sacramento River Cats (20-18) on Sunday afternoon at Raley Field.
Tacoma collected a 3-2 victory in the opening game and fell to Sacramento, 5-4, in extra innings in the nightcap.
Vogelbach combined to go 3-for-7 with three home runs and four RBI across both halves of the doubleheader. He has now hit four home runs in the last three games and has collected nine dingers in just 18 games with Tacoma this year.
Chris Herrmann reached base five times in the doubleheader, going 2-for-4 with one run scored, one home run, two RBI, and three walks.
The Rainiers got all the offense they needed in game one on home runs from Herrmann and Vogelbach. Herrmann's two-run dinger in the top of the second gave Tacoma a 2-0 lead, while Vogelbach's sixth-inning solo shot helped secure the win.
Ariel Miranda (3-0) started game one for Tacoma and earned the win, allowing just one run on four hits over five innings of work. He walked four and struck out three on 105 pitches, 64 of which were strikes.
Mike Morin (1.0 IP) allowed a run in one inning of relief, and Ryan Cook (1.0 IP) earned his second save of the year with a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning.
Vogelbach hit a solo home run in the third inning of game two, and played the hero with a game-tying two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to send the contest to extra innings. It was the first extra-innings game of the season for both teams.
Sacramento took advantage of their automatic runner at second base in the bottom of the eighth, scoring him on a Tacoma throwing error to win the nightcap, 5-4.
Tacoma game two starter Ashton Goudeau worked 2.1 innings in a spot start and allowed two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three.
Steven Moyers (1.2 IP), making his Triple-A debut in relief with the Rainiers in game two, allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three.
Dario Alvarez (1.0 IP) and Tucker Healy (1.0 IP) combined to hold the River Cats scoreless on just one hit while striking out four to close out the scheduled innings. Shawn Armstrong (0-1) took the loss in the eighth inning, allowing one unearned run with two strikeouts.
Tacoma and Sacramento continue their series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. PT. Right-hander Rob Whalen (4-2, 5.31) will take the mound for the Rainiers opposite River Cats righty Jose Flores (1-2, 4.28).
